Can't delete files on a cd-r?

I use the cd-r to back up files. When I try to delete the old files I get the message "this operation cannot be completed because you don't have sufficient priviledges for "personal files". Files aren't locked, there is not administrator, holding down option key-control & option key does not work. I can't take the files I want to update and drag them to the cd-r to replace the older files and get the message "the item personnel files could not be moved because personnel files cannot be modified.

OK, this might sound kind of obvious, but are you trying to rewrite to a CD-R?

CD-R are writeables, not REwriteables. This means that you can only burn a CD-R once, you can't edit data once it's on the disk. When you try to, your Mac will tell you that you don't have access permissions. What it really means is that you just can't rewrite to a CD-R. You should try CD-RWs, or rewriteables.

Welcome to the discussions!

Files cannot be erased from CD-R discs. In general, CD-R discs can only be written to once. They are good for archiving files.

In order to use optical media for frequent backups, you need CD-RW discs. These are re-writable. Normally, one erases the whole disc, if it was previouly used, and then burns it again with the new or modified files.
