No Best 5K?

Let me first say that I love the Nike+iPod Kit. It makes me want to run every day.

However, I've now ran four 5K's since I got it, but on my Nike+ site, under the "My Records" tab, it doesn't say anything for my best 5K. I at first thought that it was because I would run a few steps more to slow down bringing the running distance to 5.01 Km rather than the 5.00 Km. So, today I stopped my workout right at the "5.00" mark. When I uploaded it to the website though, it still didn't say anything.

I contacted Nike about it and they said that they've been having technical difficulties and that it should be fixed, but it still hasn't been fixed.

Is anybody else having this problem?

I posted something similar in one of the other threads about inaccuracies on the Nike+ site. My experience is slightly different - I've run three 5K workouts so far, the first one in 26:16, which WAS recorded on the Nike+ site as my best, the second one slightly slower, and then the third one, after calibration and the third one, thanks to calibration and extra effort, in 23:23. However the Nike+ site refuses to accept this final run as my best 5K. If I pull up the run details, it DOES know that it was a 5K run, and offers to compare it to my "best" run, which it still thinks is 26:16.

I contacted Nike too - twice, in fact, as I followed up to confirm that my iPod does store the best time correctly (under History / Personal Bests) - and, as usually happens when you contact support lines, got two slightly different responses. One saying that everything is fixed now (and no, it isn't - the time is still wrong.. unless they mean it will be fixed going forward, in which case I'll have to wait until I run again tomorrow), and the other one, an hour later, apologizing for the inconvenience, assuring me my problem has been reported to the Nike+ web team, and suggesting I check back next week...

So now, it's not just you having the problem, but I do feel reassured that Nike is working hard to smooth out these initial issues with the site.

To follow-up my own post - the first response from Nike+, saying the issue was resolved, is clearly wrong. Just returned from another 5K run, this one in 23:35, and the Nike+ site won't accept this one as being my best run either (still showing 26:16).

Now, don't get me wrong, it's good for me that I'm out there and running, but when you have one eye on your leaderboard position, it's a little frustrating to come back from a run, exhausted, to find that your time wasn't accepted by the site! It'll be interesting to see what happens with the leaderboard tonight, when the single-week stats roll over. My original 26:16 time appears in last week's stats, but my three subsequent runs would all be eligible for this week's leaderboard, IF the Nike+ site recorded any data for them. We'll see...

Here's a thought:

Pyrorunner - did you calibrate your sensor before running those 5K workouts?

In my case, I calibrated after my second run. I know that the Nike+ site accepted my first time, the second one I don't know (since it was slower), and the two runs after calibration weren't accepted.

My theory, since for me calibration reduced the distance I have to run (my first two runs were really about 5.3km), is that the Nike+ site is looking at the uncalibrated distance, and only accepting the time if you do an "uncalibrated" 5K. Since on my third and fourth runs I ran just over 5K calibrated, my iPod thinks that's the equivalent of only 4.7 or 4.8km uncalibrated, and maybe the Nike+ site is seeing this 4.8km distance instead of the true 5km distance.

Although this is just wild speculation on my part, it would also explain why mrtotes didn't have a problem, since he ran 6K, so as to be well out of the range of calibrated vs uncalibrated distance issues.

I'll have a better idea tomorrow if this is a plausible explanation. When the leaderboard gets updated tonight, if my second run (my last uncalibrated one) shows up as my best run of the week, rather than the two more recent ones, then I think we may have an answer, and if so, I'll be letting Nike know...

A worthy theory... but doesn't the Nano tell you it thinks you've run 5.3kms (or whatever) when you hit the centre button? Calibration should only change whether you did run the full distance or not. Surely if you get the calibration wrong you could run 1k but the Nano believes you've run 5k and then you'd get a super time listed on Nike+.

Jul 22, 2006 6:16 PM in response to mrtotes

I don't think that's quite what I meant.... my theory was that calibrating the sensor results in some sort of conversion factor that is applied to the distances - so that when I hit the center button and it says 5k (after calibration), the reason it says that is because the nano knows that I ran an "uncalibrated" 4.8k and then multiplies that by whatever the conversion is.

So I thought perhaps that uncalibrated distance was getting sent as part of the data transmission to Nike, and that they were wrongly picking this value out of the data instead of the calibrated distance, making the site think I'd not run far enough to register my best time. (Since I'm only interested in completing 5K, so as a result of calibrating I've not been running as far as I did before)

That theory is however blown out of the water now, as the weekly stats on the Nike+ site have just updated, and the "Fastest 5k (week)" section doesn't acknowledge me running any 5k distances this week, when in fact I'd done three (one uncalibrated, two calibrated).

So it's back to waiting for the developers to come up with a solution...

Hi,

I also have the problem of the latest 5KM time not updating.

After running initially and all the run data being uploaded successfully, I then calibrated the sensor and re-ran 5KM the following day.

This second time was obviously more accurate and the time was faster. The Nano shows this as my fastest time, but the Nike+ website still shows my first 5KM time as my 'Record'.

I ran a little over 5KM both times (5.15 the second time I believe) so the theory above about calibration may still be valid...

Anyway, I emailed Nike, but have yet to get a response. Here's hoping they're pulling all the comments and issues together to get fixed.

Hi Lee,

I emailed them also about this.. Here is their response:

Dear Dan,

Thank you for contacting us about our Nike+ technology.

Our Nike+ technology will record your time as you are running. However, the show a best time under our records, it must be set a 5K workout. We will pass on your feedback that records should be an on going thing while running or walking.

Your feedback has been passed on to the proper departments, and designers.

We appreciate the time you have taken to write Nike.

Sincerely,

Andrew

Here's what I wrote back based on my experience:
Hello,

Thanks for the reply! I ran a 30 minute workout 2 days ago, and I now have a best 5K time in My Records. I also can compare my older runs that were over 5K to my best 5K time. I didn't run a "5K workout" but it's still showing up. Maybe it only works with goal based workouts and not a Basic workout? Thanks for escalating this to the proper departments. There are threads in Apple's discussion boards were a few people agree that 5K 10K, etc. records should be ongoing.

Thanks again!

Hi Dan,

Thanks for posting up their reply - I got a rather skewed response last night from Nike, but I don't think they quite understood what I was asking so I rephrased and sent it back.

Previously I have always been running a specific workout goal - i.e. 5KM or as last night 10KM. Funnily enough after getting home and uploading my 10K time(which registers fine on my Nano) I found the Nike site hadn't set my 10KM 'Record' (it was still 0:00).

Ho Hum... I'm starting to think your personal 'Records' aren't updated until the Sunday night (like the community records).

We'll see this weekend...

Having the same problem. Did a 5k on Sunday and last night (Wed) but neither have shown up in the "My Records" section on the nikeplus website. But both have registered on the nano as "Personal Bests".

I've also noticed that my leaderboard "ever" rankings are instantly updated when I upload my workout, and whilst my "distance" and "duration" are showing correctly, there isn't an entry for my "fastest 5k".

For the record, the distance setting on my 1GB nano is "km" and I'm using the UK nikeplus portal.
