What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
I get the SWOD using Safari, Mail, Google chrome, Firefox, Mathematica, and other programs. This cannot be a browser plug-in issues as other forums suggest. I suspect a windows process at the root but I don't enough to know how to trace. Does anyone know what's causeing this epidemic?

What I said was not what I meant. On my wife's MBP the Genius guys replaced the hard drive and memory. We bought it home and used Time Machine to restore her apps and work. Then we got the recurrence of the SWOD. It was not a clean hard drive.
I ran disk repair as suggested. The total number of files on the HD needed to be repaired and it was. I will see if there is a difference on the SWOD frequency.

We all like to play around.. Try before buying.
I suggest you partition your hd into three parttions:
1) clean system with no add-ons: zero plugins and zero preference panes. When your system goes haywire, you can boot this clean system and see how things are going.
2) Normal production system. minimize plugins & preference panes. Get good reviews of the those that you install
3) Playpen for all the intreging things you find on the internet. At present, your system is in state three.

No, Avast is not good.
Your university has adopted a typical Windows-centic, closed mindset. Do they allow iPads to access their network? No?
If they require that you run anti-virus software, I suggest that you obtain a Windows PC to run it on. I understand Avast runs great on PCs.

AVG would not be a good choice either.
I'd point out that your system already includes basic anti-virus protection, and that university has no way of knowing whether you're actually using a third-party anti-virus program. You really should not feel pressured to use one. However, if you really think you need to, the best choice right now would be ClamXav.

I have MacKeeper installed and will also try uninstalling it. I can't say I ever felt it made a difference one way or the other, but I'll try removing it.

But as a warm-up, it could be Carbonite, consuming network bandwidth or disk bandwidth, especially if it is running when you are trying to work.

I will start a new post in this forum. I don't think it's carbonite though. I've had Carbonite for 3 years without an issue. And this is getting worse. On or off line, and almost constant. It took about 20 mins. to login to this site and get to this thread- uggghh!

You should start you own New post, and not thread-jack someone else's discussion. It is rare that problem reports are really identical and mixing replies to different users just gets confusing.
Along the way, get rid of your anti-malware packages, they are common causes of kernel panics and performance slow downs.

I'd remove the Flash Player or flash-block it, and would disable or block the Java Web Start, too — those tend to be the paths where folks get into malware trouble with. Eclipse is far from lightweight, too. As BobHarris surmises, it's a good bet the AV and a gigabyte of active Java code aren't playing all that well. But — rather than starting another topic, which would be the usual path here — with the Munki configuration management bits and the rest of what's visible in that report, this is probably a centrally-managed system, which means you might not be able to remove these tools — I'd contact your site IT folks for assistance.
24 July 2015 Have Spinning Wheel of Death that lasts for a number of minutes at times. I did a hardware check & found a problem with one of my RAM cards. Replaced AND upgraded to 16GB RAM. Continued to have issue. Took it to Apple Tech, he said he ran every test he could think of & found no issues. Erased HD, did a clean install of my OS, did replace data using time machine back up. Better for a few days, now starting up again. Ran Etresoft, results below. Can anyone review the info below and give me some idea of what the issue might be? BTW, did not start Carbonite back up again as I understand that program may be an issue on Macs.
