What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?

I get the SWOD using Safari, Mail, Google chrome, Firefox, Mathematica, and other programs. This cannot be a browser plug-in issues as other forums suggest. I suspect a windows process at the root but I don't enough to know how to trace. Does anyone know what's causeing this epidemic?

The SWOD occurs when an application has been unresponsive to system events for a number of seconds.

Potential causes are myriad. Sometimes it's a badly behaved (often 3rd party) driver locking up some critical I/O. Sometimes it's running out of memory. Sometimes it's hard drive corruption. Sometimes it's badly written software tying up system resources in one way or another. The list goes on.

Activity Monitor may be able to shed some light on what is happening. You could look for unusually high CPU, disk, or memory swapping activity. You could also get info on specific stalled applications to see what they are up to. Are they using a lot of CPU? Are they thrashing memory? If you hit Sample, you may get some hint about where the application is stuck from the function call stack.

The system log may also shed some light on persistent problems. You can view it through the Console utility.

No. Avast has a serious problem with false positives, sporadically identifying a particular system file as malicious since 2009, among other things. This is bad, but worse, the avast! Online Security browser extension includes an "adware" function that is turned on by default and is not mentioned anywhere in the install process. Avast is garbage, and should not be used.

The University where I take classes requires some sort of anti-virus for computers to access their network. Is there another free one which is good? AVG?

AVG would not be a good choice either.

I'd point out that your system already includes basic anti-virus protection, and that university has no way of knowing whether you're actually using a third-party anti-virus program. You really should not feel pressured to use one. However, if you really think you need to, the best choice right now would be ClamXav.

Um, you already have an anti-virus and anti-malware package installed. XProtect and Gatekeeper. These provided by Apple, and part of all recent OS X releases. Not perfect certainly and not without issues, but then neither are the commercial anti-virus packages, or so a VP from Symantec has been quoted.

Using two separate anti-virus implementations — one that's been integrated by and maintained by the operating system vendor, and a second one that's an add-on with a long history of causing problems — is seldom a recipe for success, for that matter.

As for the usual means of avoiding problems...

  • never install add-on software that claims to optimize, accelerate, clean, maintain, protect, secure, or otherwise something-something to OS X.
  • Disable, remove and.or block access to Oracle Java and Adobe Flash Player possibly via a plugin blocker in Safari.
  • Disable automatic opening of "Safe" file extension downloads in Safari.
  • Don't click on links in mail messages, even if the mail messages appear to be from folks you know. Search for it or type it in yourself or use your own bookmark. This particularly with the blizzard of mail from the "social" sites — treat all of those mail messages as untrusted and untrustworthy.
  • Don't install any packages that you didn't go looking for.
  • Treat any application that asks for your administrative password access as if it has asked for the contents of your keychain and your most sensitive data. Because it just did ask for that access.
  • when you do go looking for a software package, don't download the package from any of the aggregator sites — spend the time to find the canonical download site for the package you're interested in.

There are probably a few others, but this covers most of the sorts of problems most computer users will encounter with OS X.

I too experience this problem and ran EntreCheck. Can someone help me diagnose all the failed system launch items below??

I have MacKeeper installed and will also try uninstalling it. I can't say I ever felt it made a difference one way or the other, but I'll try removing it.

Jan 23, 2015 10:54 AM in response to John Galt

Hi John,

Having problems with the "wait cursor" among other things. Saw your thread on Spinning Wheel of Death and tried your fixes:

1. Backed up documents.

2. Did boot OS X Recovery "Repair Disk" and got no reports in red.

3. Ran EtreCheck and got the following reply (says I still have "CleanMyMac" on my system but I uninstalled it before running EtreCheck.

Thanks in advance for your help in resolving my issue !!!

Problem description:

Getting the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD).

Sometimes the SWOD turns all blue then a watch.

When typing, it takes forever for the characters to show.

Programs take a long time to launch.

Sound of videos is scratchy or in and out.
