My iphone 5 and ipad will only play itunes purchased songs, how can i get my other songs to play as well?

I have a bunch of purchased songs on my itunes, but i also have songs from cds that my friends have burned me. i can not get the non itunes purchased songs to play on my iphone or my ipad. the titles show up but they are grey and won't allow me to play them? Is there anyway i can get them to work again, or apple only allowing itunes music to be played on their devices?

All of my software is updated on my itunes and both devices. please help meh
