No, Chris this this works I had to do this myself so I know for a fact that it will still work. I’ve actually done it several times for family members and friends

User uploaded fileYes, it works, but it's not Activation Lock, the original subject of this thread. If the device is asking for a four or six digit numerical code, this is a passcode, and as you say can be got past by erasing and resetting the device. If however the device is showing a screen like that shown at right, this is Activation Lock and without the required ID and password being supplied by the person who set the lock there is no way whatever of bypassing it. That was the situation the OP found himself in.

So what about me. I bought my ipad from a shop big uk retailer cash. Was never made aware that i would need to keep POP. We had a problem with a laptop my wife bought second hand hijacking our router and infecting most of our devices. There was nothing wrong with my ipad except unusual dialogs. So i reported this to apple. They wanted me to contact police etc. They then locked my ipad stating they would reset once i had crime id. which i reported to them. In the mean time it seems some how the find my iphone app was triggered. Not by me. Never even really used icloud so had no memory of Id. so i know i didnt set the find my iphone app up. Who triggered it ? Apple. Even though i have all the correct user details i still cant undo the activation lock ? why. I spoke to tech and they say POP. but that is not possible as retailer does not keep cash receipt records for that long.

So i lose my ipad because apple chose to lock me out how is that fair??

the ipad has never left my house and has never been reported lost. Its a ridiculously over zealous security measure that common sense could solve. it not difficult for someone to prove their identity so why do this?

Not stolen not lost and found not going to accept they can get away with it.

Sounds to me like you fell victim to a scam. You didn't call Apple. You called someone else. Apple would never lock a customer device as you describe. You we're conned.

Without POP, you're hosed. It's your responsibility to keep track of important documents.
