Apple TV not recognised by Panasonic Viera. Works with Hitachi on the same network.

ATV gen 3 no longer working on my setup. Virgin 120 Mbps, broadband, Panasonic Viera TX-L37U3B with Ver 1.016 update. Suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason.

I've scoured all the forums but have been unable to find anyone with the same problem.

Can anyone help?

Ok, the full story. I've had gen 2 ATV for a while and it all worked fine with the Viera. I had to change my Virgin TiVo box and even though I can't blame that event as the box does not connect to ATV, ever since then the ATV doesn't show on the Viera tv, it just shows as a black screen.

It all works on another tv (Hitachi) without any problems. I had thought that the gen 2 being 720 and the Viera being 1060 might be part of the problem but having borrowed a gen 3 and tried that, I've ruled that option out.

I've updated ATV (on the Hitachi) and also the Viera with the latest downloads but so far the problem is still there. Very frustrating.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

You may wish to try the following:

Press and hold the menu and the up button simultaneously on the remote for six seconds, the Apple TV should then begin to cycle through the various resolutions available to it at 20 second intervals.. If you see a picture appear up on your screen, use the remote to scroll down to the OK option and select it.

It's usually because the TV doesn't broadcast it's accepted resolutions and hence the Apple TV can't auto set it's output to match, which is where cycling the resolutions manually as suggested comes in.

As an alternative, you might connect it to another TV and try setting the resolution from the menu and then connecting it to the TV you are having problems with.

Hi Winston Churchill, I tried the alternative option of manually setting the resolution to 1080p on another tv but unfortunately without any success.

It's still just the blank screen.

I'm really appreciative of your efforts so far and wonder if the output from the tv could be at fault? Is it possible that the tv itself may be the problem as the change was quite sudden?

Hi i hav the same prob too My apple tv 3rd gen has suddenly stopped working with my 42" panasonic led tv , model no: TX-L42E3B. When i connect it via hdmi to the tv there is no display at all. The strange thing is it worked on this tv perfectly until 2 weeks ago, but it still works with every other tv in the house. Does anyone know what i can do to fix this

I also have this issue with an ATV3 just purchased earlier today. I have been unable to get a signal to my Panasonic TH-L42E3S, which supports resolutions up to 1080p. The devices are linked directly with an HDMI cable, I have disconnected all other devices, updated the firmware on both devices, tried all combinations of ports, TV AV inputs, three different HDMI-cables that work with other devices, and cable directions. I have also tried cycling through resolutions from the ATV. Still the screen remains depressingly dark.

The ATV works fine when connected to my external samsung 24" monitor.

Has anyone had any success solving this problem?

thank you so much for putting this on here. Something happened to my apple tv that it was only showing partly on the screen called

apple for support they couldn't figure it out since it worked on my other tv. they told me to hold down the menu button and down button but

it didn't correct anything. I did what you said holding down the menu and up button it was a bit weird for a while trying to get it to go to something but It WORKED!!!!! YEAH! I now have the full picture again. THANKS SO MUCH.

Hi, similar problem here. I did the most recent Apple TV update, and now I am experiencing compatibility issues with my Panasonic Viera plasma TV (TH-42PD25). When the update was completed and the ATV restarted, my screen was cropped (see photo). I did the "press and hold Menu and Up button" to find a resolution that fit, and the only one I get is 480p. When I try to select 720p or 1080p manually, I get a bad image--with a distorted Apple logo streaming horizontally right to left. Does the latest Apple TV update have a problem determining my TV's resolution capability? Anyone have similar problems or know of any fixes? It's a shame my ATV can't find a resolution better than 480p on an HDTV. Didn't have this problem before the recent Apple TV update.

I bought an Apple TV today, 19 Jan 2015. I hooked it up to my 2012 Panasonic's HDMI-1 port. The TV Input would not recognize the new Apple TV. I then hooked it up to my 2011 Panasonic's HDMI-1 port. Same problem. I had to return the Apple TV and HDMI cable to the store and get a refund. I am an all Apple person: iMac; Apple AirPort Extreme; iPhones; etc. Oh well! Se la Vie for this Old Retired EE!
