kextcache process running wild

the process "kextcache" runs with almost 100% after each startup of the system on my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 with Mac OS X 10.9.1 for about 10 - 15 minutes. This uses 15 % of battery capacity. It is impossible to shutdown the computer within this timespan until the process finishes its work (computer is off after 10 to 15 minutes). What does this process do? It is running crazy after upgrading to Mavericks. I already made a safe system start with Shift held down, PARAM and SMC reset but it did not help. What else can I do?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the problem application or process (kextcache) in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last episode, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

Step 2

In the Console window, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report, if any, and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

This is the log from System log. Be aware that the Firewire related errors are "normal" because I had to remove all Firewire extensions. This is because the Firewire port in the MacBook Pro was on fire, in the very meaning of the words. With the extensions installed the Mac crashes; without them it doesn't. The missing extensions caused no problems before Mavericks. I'm not sure, whether they do now.

There was no crash report und System Diagnostic Reports. Only shutdownStall reports.

The computer will not work if you remove essential components of the operating system. If the FireWire port is literally spewing flames, then you have a hardware problem and it urgently needs to be repaired.

No, the computer works BECAUSE I removed the Firewire extensions. Repairing was denied by Apple. Only a motherboard exchange is an option which is far too expensive. As I wrote, everything was fine before upgrading to Mavericks. Since then the kextcache process uses a lot of processor power after the start, therefore I asked the question.

Hey Steffen,

Same problem here, working hard on a fix. I found that all error-causing files, except iPodDriver.kext are located in /System/Library/Extensions/AppleStorageDrivers.kext/Contents/Plugins/

When I go inside one of those, for example /LSI-FW-500.kext/Contents, there is an Info.plist file. In that file are there are some keys defined(scroll down), the top three bening the name of the missing dependencies, being:

com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireFamily

com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport

com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireSBP2

I deleted them in one of the kext's plists (of course, after making a backup ;-)), and now it stops mocking about that kext during boot, except that it says the signature is invalid, because I edited it.

You can edit the plists by using terminal to navigate to the folder(/System/Library/Extensions/AppleStorageDrivers.kext/Contents/Plugins/LSI -FW-500.kext/Contenst) and then typing "sudo nano Info.plist", enter your password, and go! Move the cursor with arrow keys, delete the lines you want to delete, and hit "control+o"(WriteOut) to save file. It wil ask you to confirm the filename. Hit enter. Hit "control+x" to exit the editor.

Of course make a backup of the files you're going to edit.

I don't know yet if this will make the process less cpu intensive. I'm still searching for a way to get the signature right, and then edit all the files....

Have you unloaded/removed any Apple KEXT's from your machine?

Me? Yes, the same as Steffen I guess. I removed /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWire*.kext.

I did that because the firewire on my logicboard is broken. Replacing the motherboard it is not an option, because my MacBook Pro 4,1(early 2008) is just to old to invest such an amount of money in.

When I leave the FW modules in there, it doesn't even boot. With 10.6.8 it would boot, but take 15-20 minutes. Besides that, it wouldn't wake from sleep, and some other annoying stuff. that's why I removed the kexts.

So it's no option to place them back. Only option is destroy even more of the core of my system. ;-)

Oh, btw Steffen, don't drag and drop files into your kexts, cause then the permissions one the plist are wrong, and it'll omit the kext completely.

Thank you for the hint. I did it slightly different. Instead of altering the info.plists I created a folder "Plugins (disabled)" inside the AppleStorageDrivers.kext and moved the extensions you mentioned above inside that folder. It is much safer than deleting something. The kextd process started the kextcache process only once after a bootup and then everything is quiet again. Because my FireWire port is damaged I will never again connect to a FireWire device with my MacBook Pro and can therefore resign to those FireWire related extensions.

Glad you got it sorted! :-) Do you have an iPod/iPhone? Because the iPodDrivers.kext might be one that you need.

My iPod stoped showing up in iTunes when I moved the iPodDriver.kext....

I didn't move the iPodDriver.kext. Kextcache is quiet with the driver on its default place.

Well, that's nice. :-) After a day of fiddling with plist files, I also just moved the files to a subfolder.

In case anyone wants to try it, adding IOFireWireFamily.kext to the list of AppleKextExcludeList.kext didn't work for me. It just wouldn't boot. I had to boot from a 10.6 dvd(with firewire modules, so verry slow) and from there use terminal to remove the Firewire modules from my 10.9 partition. If your main drive is called "HD", the command for this is "sudo mv /Volumes/HD/System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWire* /Volumes/HD"

This will just put the modules in the root of your HD. :-)
