Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Hi guys - as promised here is an update.

I have just got back from my genius appointment and they have taken my mac in for repair, I should have it back in about 5 days to a week. They said that they had not seen this before and had trouble locating parts or really just the spring assembly that does not seem to be a separate unit and because of this they have had to order me a complete replacement back unit (the whole rear assembly) and a new stand (foot) this little lot comes to about £600 so not a cheap repair. Lucky for me as the unit is not a year old so was covered by the original warranty but I also have 3 years apple care that will start when the warranty expires.

The apple guy did say that he had to run this passed his manager to ensure that there would not be any charges to be met by myself,I don't think that I can repeat here my answer to him which was interspersed with key items from consumer law lol.

Anyway I will give you an update when I get the mac back to let you know if they have repaired it to my satisfaction (yes I am one of those nightmare customers lol)

Many thanks for your help and suggestions guys :-)

Well, this just happened to me too, tonight. I went out to dinner w/ my husband, came back, and found the display of my late-2013 27" iMac tilted all the forward and loose. Right now, I have a heavy object behind the display preventing the tilt so I can work, but I'll be calling Support in the morning.

Apple, you can add yet another late-2013 27" iMac, purchased new in 2013, to your display stand manufacturer defect list.

My iMac stand just crazy snapped , down direction the screen faces now.. a crazy loud noise heard across the room.. no one touching the stand, it is a flaw in the design ,not a mistreated item . The computer hasn't been moved since it was bought and put on my desk. Anyway, I propped an object underneath the screen and it faces at me now ... I don't plan on spending money to have it repaired . I would imagine this happened to many people but they don't complain as loud as me

I just took mine yesterday to the Apple Store (Yorkdale in Toronto) and the guy said it's $150 for the labour and part. I even told him about this thread and how people have had it fixed for free out of warranty. He then said it's not a known issue but that some cases are unique. If they charge me, I'll be writing an email and linking to this thread.

What did you tell them when you brought it?

AppleCare inlcudes telphone support, Apple provides a complimentary 90 day coverage. If you want AppleCare after 90 days you have to purchase it, this will extend the telephone coverage to 3 years and also extend the warranty periord to 3 years. Apple explains it for Macs as:

Mac and Apple Display

  • Extend your service and support coverage to three years from the date you purchased your hardware.
  • Get global repair coverage for all included hardware and accessories through convenient service options.
  • Enjoy direct access to Apple experts for questions on a wide range of Mac topics, including using OS X, iLife, and connecting to printers and AirPort networks.

You can read more about it on the AppleCare webpage at http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/applecare?afid=p219%7CGOUS&cid=AOS-US-KWG- BTB

Hi all,

I believe I just joined this group.

Last night, Wed 25June2014 at exactly 8:25pm PST I heard one "pop!" and watched as the display of my iMac 27-inch, Late 2013, did a free fall to the max forward tilt down position. I purchased my iMac online on March 14th, 2014 which amounts to about 104 days (not sure if the 1 year warranty starts on purchase date or delivery date?). Most of these similar failures reported in this thread seem to have occurred at about the one year mark or a bit sooner, so mine by comparison has failed pretty quickly.

I had a hard time finding any spec on "tilt" but am glad I found this thread and others who have had the same iMac failure (misery loves company?). Indeed, from the looks of user heySkippy’s image of a broken plastic washer as the culprit in this failure, it is a design flaw and if plastic washers are used in the repair or continue to be used in manufacturing, then we’ll be seeing more of these failures. Because a lot of people like myself need to have their iMac up-right and doing work, and because the failure is likely to happen again, I’m hesitating going through the inconvenience of having it repaired. I also wonder how many other folks have had this failure and are not reporting it and simply putting a “door stop” under the display to get an acceptable viewing angle.

I will add to this thread if I decide to get my iMac repaired. Here’s a photo of my solution, one of my wah-wah pedals.

Hello. I feel your frustration--I did. I came up with a primitive, very low tech solution.

I took a small piece of dowel and pushed it through the opening in the back until it tilted the monitor to my liking. I placed a small vice grip plier at a point inside the hole so it would keep the dowel in place. That also allows those who want to vary the tilt to do so with some ease.

I feel sure you will have some materials around your home which will work just as well: a pencil not a dowel and a strong, spring clothes pin not the pliers for example.

I hope this helps.
