Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Got it back from the shop. If anyone is interested, here is the defective piece.

Note the two red arrows. These point to the inner mounting points of the tension springs. The one on the left has broken lose, the one on the right is good. The inner ends of the springs are held in place by plastic washers and one failed.

This hinge mechanism appears to be very high quality except for what appears to be one sorely underengineered piece. The shop replaced the whole hinge, but it looks to me like a washer could be put in place of the broken plastic and it would work. Might be something to consider once these start to go out of warranty.

Yep...I'm the latest victim.

Was doin' work on my 27' iMac (Mid-2013 model), and POP...then the screen just sank down.

I have the same problem on my iMac 27" they want it 10 days but I can't lose it that long I run my business on it

2004, I was responding to the question of a SECOND failure of the hinge after a first repair.

There is no doubt that there is a problem.

Had to take mine to a service centre 30 miles away today and will need to collect after approx 5 days. They agreed not to charge, after I gave them links to this site. They didn't volunteer...

Mac (27-inch, Late 2013) broken stand. 😢

1-year warranty expired in April this year. 😟

Hopefully the might repair it for free given the number of folks with this issue.

I had the same happened to me last week exactly as you explained and My IMAC is only 9 m old. now I need to take it for repair

Same here, it just "cracks". Absolutely disappointed with the quality of this Apple product. And moreover, the guarantee finished some weeks ago.

apple will fix this for free up to 3 years after the original purchase. They know it's an issue so they cover under an extended warranty.

It's what the Genius Bar guy told me when I took mine in for repairs last Friday (Oct. 2nd, 2015).
