Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Hi,

This is the second time my Mac 27" (2013) gave up 😟 . First time it was covered under AC, and after 15 months it happened again, second time the repair is free (material) but other charges applies.

After the repair the Apple authorise repair centre forgot to put the fan connection. and it spoiled my one 8 GB RAM and have graphic display issue.( They are making enough money from iPhone, so do not bother about mac , mac book etc)

Its looks like Apple did not change the design for the replacement kit.

Its a design issue (I don't know which designer inside apple decided to put a stiff rubber to hold 14 KG display) I herd Mr. J Ive now days busy in new apple construction site. Good he is busy there or else the new Mac Book pro would have been designed with 1mm thiner and lighter than paper ( put the display and key board external to use with dongle)

So no more iMac for me in future. the the picture of my mac hinge.

Surely the fanboi brigade will chime in shortly to tell us this was a brilliant design decision, but I'm disappointed to hear that Apple is punting rather than addressing the underlying issue. I wonder if current iMacs still use this design.

Cyber musician and others: based on my experience, I would recommend that you call Applecare now to make an appointment at your local Mac store, and grind on them about how this needs to be a free fix and refer them to this discussion. Otherwise, you may end up having to argue your case in store. I got a little pushback when I did that. I figure if you'll have two shots at making your case if you do it with Applecare when you make the appointment.

Hey bro. I bought mine in 2013 too with 3-year AppleCare that ended Nov 30,2016 and in the following week I was typing on the keyboard and suddenly "crack" and "snap" the screen started to move toward the desk. It was 2 days out of warranty. AppleCare booked me into a store and repaired the hinge. In th end I paid about $160 or so to fix it! To me it is a design fault because the 27" screen is very very very heavy and the iMac has been moved only twice in the last three years. Oh, well if I were younger I would have argued until they would do it for free. :-(
