How to calibrate iPhone battery?

My 6 month old iPhone 5 battery registered 67%, then I was recording a video for all of 2 minutes

when suddenly my iPhone shut down.


Surely my battery is ok. I think the battery needs re calibrating to give a more accurate representation of battery status.


How do I do this?

This is a fault of the battery. It is swelking and causing the phone to shut down due to pressure on the circuit board inside.


Go to an Apple Store to discuss your options . They will often quote to replace the battery and replace the entire handset with a refurbished unit (the one I got was like new!!)


Hope this helps others out there suffering this fault.

A Friend of mine had the some problem with her iPhone 5c and we worked out that it was the charger,.


try these steps to try and resolve to problem.


1, Check the charging port of lint

2, If changing via USB on a computer then try using a mains charger

3. If charging via a mains charger then try charging from a computers USB port

4. If option 2 or 3 didn't work then try options 2 & 3 again but with a different cable


It could also be that the phone a froze, if that is the case then try doing another soft reset


If none of the above work then I suspect either a dead battery or a hardware fault.


If all else fails then book an appointment at your nearest apple retail store and take your phone, cable & charger in for testing.


If your phone is less than 3 months (1yr for uk) then the battery is covered under the warranty.

also have you checked with apple as I do know that a small number of iPhone 5's were shipped with faulty batteries

to calibrate the battery do the following


Charge iphone fully (Do Not Use While Charging), use phone until it shuts its self off, fully charge again (Do Not Use While Charging), do a warm reboot (hold on/off & home buttons until apple logo appears).


to keep the battery in top condition it is recommended that you do a full charge cycle at least once every 6 weeks, to do a full charge cycle drain battery down to 20% or less then give phone a full charge.

I totally agree with you on the charge cycle point, but what has happened over then last 6 months is his battery meter has gone out of alignment and not giving a true reading of how much charge is in the phone.


By running the phone down and fully charging it twice will re-calibrate the battery meter so that it will give original poster a more accurate value of how much charge is in his phone (Tho this still wont give 100% accuracy as the battery meter is only a rough indication).


Tho, some people have found that just giving the phone a warm reboot will also fix problem but this is not garenteed.

Tap the Assistive Touch button, Tap Device, Press and hold the Lock Icon


The 'Slide To Turn Off' should then appear, use it to turn the phone off, wait for a minute or so then

plug the phone into your computer or into the power adapter - the phone should then come back on.

hello, recently I've been having problems with my iPhone battery and i came across this thread, in hopes I could fix them. I stumbled upon this thread a couple weeks ago. My iPhone died during a power outage and I couldn't charge it until power came back which took 2-3 hours.As soon as power came back, I plugged it into the outlet. However it took 4 whole days to turn on. But my battery still continues to drain quickly. Today I tried your method to calibrate the battery, however at the last step, after soft resetting my iPhone, it brought it back to the black screen with the red battery icon. Is this natural? And is there a way to fix this without hard resetting and deleting everything off my phone?

When you plug it in to charge do you get the lightning bolt symbol come up, if not then I would try a different USB port, if that doesn't work then try a different cable or try using a wall charger, if then it still won't charge then you could have a dead battery or a hardware fault and I would book an appointment at your nearest genius bar and have it checked

no lightning bolt, just An empty battery icon but this has never been a problem. It was like this last time and I let it charge overnight and still hasn't turned on. I wanna call my girl but her new number is on my phone smh. i should've just left it as is, yesterday when I "calibrated" the battery it was at 100% then I pressed and held sleep/power with the home button to soft reset and that 100% went to a black screen with an empty battery icon like it was dead. I should've just left it as is. I'm trying to calm down but this is ridiculous. I should've got an android.

I Am using an outlet charger, specifically the iPad charger because it provides more power and faster charging. Last time when it took 4 days to charge I used usb to laptop method but I figured since usb is slow compared to outlet, outlet charging would be the best solution. As for the wire, well it worked last tiime, this is really ridiculous man, thank you for giving me advice I'm starting to lose my mind over this.

There is one last thing you can try but it involves a little bit of risk,


1. Turn off phone completely

2. Connect the apple cable to phone

3. Plug the apple power brick into mains

4. Plug Apple cable into power brick


now you need to wait and see if the phone comes on and starts charging, it can take up to 10 mins before you will see anything happen.


If nothing happens after the above procedure then I would defintly take it to an apple retail store as then means there is a hardware fault.


ps. Make sure you are using the apple cable and charger and not any third party cables or chargers as many of then don't work with the latest generation of apple devices.


The only other thing I can think of is putting the phone into DFU mode and do a restore through iTunes.


Other other than that I'm out of ideas, hopefully someone else might come up with something.
