1st Generation iPAD iOS

I have the 1st generation iPAD with iOS5.1.1 - I am finding that many applications require a "newer version of iPAD Software" however when I try updating via iTunes 5.1.1 is the latest. Will Apple be providing an iOS update for 1st Gen iPAD users? When?

For example, I received a UltraViolet DVD for Xmas and am unable to play it on iPAD because I am unable to download the Flixter App.

Hi,

I just sent this same info to people with the same issue. -

If you need a newer version of the ipad to access apps you need, you might look into selling your ipad 1. There are many ways you can do this. For example, gazelle.com will give $50.00 cash for any ipad 1 in good condition. Cashforyourmac.com will match that and right now has a holiday bonus of $25.00, so that's a $105.00. Sellyourmac.com will make a cash offer and you can counter it. Cashforyourmac.com will also meet it and give you the $25.00 holiday bonus. All have free shipping.

You can then put that money toward a new ipad and if you don't want to spend the money on a new one you might want to consider the online only Apple certified refurbished store. It's probably the only place where you can buy a refurbished ipad where each comes with a new front and back cover, a brand new battery, and a full one year warranty including 90 days of phone support and free shipping. Ipad versions come and go on the site, so if you see what you want, buy it fast. If it's not there, be patient. Most will show up again.

Please note there are many sites/ways to sell your ipad 1. Amazon and others will pay you with gift cards, but then you're restricted to using it on their sites. Too many seem to be sitting on ebay, etc., and you do not get warrantees, etc. in most cases. Some might have been stolen and new owners of them are stuck because someone's else's ID and info are on it, so it can't be restored. Google places to sell your ipad 1. There will be many.

Hope this helps.

Hi Catherine287,

I'm happy to have helped. I'm so curious ... What did you decide to do? Also, I had forgotten to mention that we were going to buy my husband an ipad 3 but I wasn't thrilled with some issues, so we decided to buy a new ipad 2. By the time I decided, though, I couldn't find a new ipad 2 32 gb anywhere. So for the first time we bought a refurbed ipad 2 (64 gb because the price was so great.) We then bought our younger son one to use around campus, etc. They're a year and a half old, and they've been great. (Without having bought them, I would not have recommended them)

Whatever you bought or plan to buy, enjoy it!

At least you've made a decision to hold off for now! That's a start. If you're looking into non-Apple tablets (and given some threads here on the subject,) you might look into those with parental controls so children can only access what you want them to. There are also some that have 'time set' controls to limit the time your 5 year old can be on your tablet. I don't know which ones, I only know from this support site that it's a concern for many parents.

Enjoy whatever you eventually buy!

I recently came across a similar problem, in trying to install Netflix and also Flixster for Ultraviolet on my first generation iPad. I found this solution on another thread, and I was able to download older iOS 5.1.1 versions of the apps easily, to stream movies and even download the UV copies for offline viewing. Thanks to flambocious & pilotkausa in the original thread for the great advice! Hope this helps.

1) Open iTunes on your desktop.

2) Go to the iTunes Store.

3) Search for the app you want (Netflix, Flixster, etc); download the app to your desktop.

4) Open App Store on your iPad.

5) Click on “Purchased.” Find the newly downloaded app on your list, and click “Install.” App Store will ask you: "Download an older version of this app. The current version requires iOS 6.0 or later, but you can download the last compatible version." Just click "Download" and you’re ready to go. You can install any app like that.
