Must I close my Intego software when I install 10.4.x upgrades ?

I have purchased and installed Intego protection software (particularly Virus Barrier X4 and Net Barrier X4) on my Apple computer running Mac OS X 10.4.x.
I can't find out whether I am supposed to close this Intego software prior to installing Apple upgrades or not.

Could somebody please help ?

Hello,

Whenever you are installing updates, you should always disable Anti-Virus and any other program currently running.

Anti-Virus programs can misinterpret updates as unauthorized modifications. If they do, then they may prevent something from being changed that should be changed.

Likewise, some programs can cause trouble by just being open. If they are actively calling on a routine when that routine gets updated, then you could have a problem.

So, before you install any update, close and shutdown any program that is running.

I personally will usually shutdown and restart right before an update. That way I know everything is definitely closed. But, you will need to disable / close some programs (like Antivirus and Security programs) manually. Even after a restart (unless it has been set to prevent loading at startup).

I hope this helps.

Hello, mhunter.

Thank you very much for your reply, and for the most helpful detail you have gone into. I feel I now really know where I stand regarding the question that was bothering me.

You are quite right about my Antivirus and Security programs requiring to be manually disabled before startup : I have found out how to do it (i.e. through "Diablotin", which is a freeware program I have just downloaded).

So, once again, thanks a lot !
