Mouse freeze

I have Safari 7.0.1 running on OS X 10.9.1. The mouse seems to freeze up when the slider bar appears.

My I-Mac mouse freezes since I upgraded to Maverick. Seems to be related to slider bar on Safari. Maybe not. I have 4GB. Activity Monitor shows Safari is a memory hog (over 200 MB) I'm using most of the 4GB unless I shut down some apps. I clean up regularly with MacKeeper.

Anyhow here's my EtreCheck output.

200 MB is nothing for Safari. Mavericks incorporates a new memory compression algorithm that will utilize RAM to the maximum extent and it is normal to see nearly all of it "used".

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.

Never install MacKeeper, or anything like it, ever again.

  • If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
  • Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
  • Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
  • Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.

You will be asked to authenticate (twice):

User uploaded file

You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:

User uploaded file

Just Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.

After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

Is Apple saying that MacKeeper is not compatible?

No. We are saying it is junk.

OK ... if I un-install it what do I use in its place?

1. For file encryption

Use an encrypted disk image, or FileVault for whole disk encryption. Or, find a better third-party solution.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1578

2. For Virus protection

Nothing. Not needed. Can only cause problems.

3. Clean up of files

Completely unnecessary. Those functions in this and similar crapware will likely delete necessary files, causing corruption of the file system and breaking the OS.

Thanks (Do you work for Apple?)

No. None of the users here work for Apple.

There may not have been any problem that you were aware of, but MacKeeper and products just like it can only degrade performance and can easily corrupt your system making it difficult or impossible to use.

MacKeeper isn't even the worst of such worthless products, it is merely the most notorious due to advertising strategies that are as aggressive as they are effective. Judging from an overwhelming number of user reports on this site, their technical support is incompetent and their marketing tactics are unethical. Their purpose is to separate you from your money, after which their mission is complete.

Once again: MacKeeper is not the only such product, so be vigilant of similar junk from similarly worthless snake oil vendors. They appear in the guise of "cleaning" or "protecting" your Mac. Some use clever cartoon characters, some use scare tactics, while others employ highbrow arrogance claiming they know more about Apple products than Apple itself. All of them are extremely prevalent, and the only defense against them is you.

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.

  • Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
  • Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
  • Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
  • Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
    • Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
    • Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
    • Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
  • Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
  • Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
    • Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
    • Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
    • Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
  • Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
    • Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
    • Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
    • If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
  • Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
    • The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
    • OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
    • Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
    • If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
    • Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
  • Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.

Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

Thanks John and Barney.

MacKeeper is un-installed and system works fine after re-boot.

My Safari preferences are as you stated.

I'll try the encryption next for a few files

Also, I use mSecure for passwords because we have very many of them. Any problems with that product?

Or do you recommend something else. (We have an I-Pad and I-Phone and I know you can use the password service on I-Cloud (but I really don't trust I-Cloud)

I don't have it but mSecure appears to be well regarded. 1Password is another one to consider. It's more expensive.

The only complaint I have with iCloud Keychain is it could use some improvements regarding password flexibility. Some websites have ridiculous requirements that consider iCloud's suggested passwords insufficently complex. Other than that it works fine.

Aug 21, 2014 2:33 AM in response to John Galt

I'm having to tag onto an existing discussion, the new discussion interface won't let me post a new question.

I am having constant, irratic mouse freezing issues. At random times, it won't move left, or won't move right, or moves to the wrong place and fails (dropping a drag and drop item in the wrong place). The computer in question is not running anything but FCP 7.0 (you know, the good one). Mavericks has been installed on this computer for almost a year, the mouse issue is new. The only other problem I have had is jerky video on FCP.

No browser is active, I have to go through extra effort even to put this computer on line. The mouse is hard wired directly into the USB port, I've tried two different laser mice. I'm guessing its some sort of memory issue, because it clears up with no use for a few moves, then its like it runs out of something and needs to recharge. The jerky video problem seems to be related in it also improves after letting the machine rest. Stopping and resting does not help my computer generated ADD.

Based on this discussion and other discussions I've opened up the console looking for error messages--I don't see anything graphics related or repetitive. And I've included the system report.
