This just started a few days ago. My iPhone 4 did this but I just assumed it was because it was old. It never fixed itself and became a hassle. I've only had my 5 for 6 months or so and it has just started. What caused it, and is there a setting or something I can go to, to fix it back?

I have three iPhones connected on different cables to my iMac and they are all doing this. Every time.
Unplug phone
Plug phone back in and it's not charging or showing up in iTunes.
Unplug phone again and immediately plug it back in, now it's charging and visible in iTunes.
Works every time without fail.
What happens when you plug them in to the Apple wall adapter? A computer has only limited capacity to charge iPhone devices. As you say you have 3 phones that number probably exceeds the capacity of your iMac to charge phones simultaneously. Unless it is less than 2 years old, it can only charge one phone at a time. And if it is recent it can only charge 2.
I have an Anker 9-port USB 3.0 hub with an external power supply connected to the iMac. But regardless, the iMac (2014 5K) has 4 x USB 3.0 and regardless where I plug in the phones, it's always the same.
On the wall connections, they start charging immediately.
Did you find out what the problem was? Does it work now?
