Sync my hotmail (outlook.com) contacts with macbook pro?

Hi,

I have just got a new macbook pro. I currently use hotmail via outlook.com, this looks after my mail, contacts and calendar. I do not use icloud. This all syncs perfectly with my ipad and iphone. I have been trying to set it up to do the same on my Macbook Pro but was having issues. From what I understand Exchange Activesync which works on the iphone/ipad is not supported on the Macbook. is this correct?

I have managed to get the mail working by adding an imap mail account. However this does not seem to sync contacts?

I see I can add a contacts account but can't seem to get it to work? Is it possible if so how please?

Thanks for the help.

If you are just after a 1 time sync to transfer your contacts to your mac

I'm not after any kind of sync with Outlook.com, but thanks for asking anyway.

...well not you but jamphi24 or anyone else who is reading this post which is called:

and not: Csound1 is sharing his thoughts with us. Sorry I accidentally replied to you. Must have something to do with that every second post is from you, although I cant see actually any solution from you addressed to the original issue of sync contacts. Oh hang on, there was actually something: set it up as Imap account instead of pop... very smart. I am sure that helped a loooot. You're welcome by the way.

Both Office 365 AND Outlook.com support Exchange Synchronization. For Mac setup, you have to specify the Server as it is not automatically detected.

The settings for outlook.com (hotmail, live, etc) are here:

  • Server address: s.outlook.com
  • Domain: <leave empty>
  • User name: Your email address
  • Password: Your password
  • TLS/SSL encryption required: Yes

I found a solution - contacts can be moved from Hotmail to Mac and iCloud via Gmail.

  1. Go to gmail, Settings -> Accounts and Import
  2. Click Import Mail and Contacts, sign in to your Hotmail account and follow the prompts.
  3. Import contacts in to gmail.
  4. On your Mac, open Contacts and add the gmail account - you will see all your gmail contacts on your Mac
  5. In your Contacts copy or move your contacts into the iCloud.
