My tv only had one hdmi ports and that used for the cable box....what am I supposed to do with the the Apple TV hdmi cable.... Do I lose my cable if I don't plug it into the tv

Best I think to get an A/V receiver. Mine has four HDMI inputs. Can connect multiple HDMI input devices to it (in your case cable box, apple tv, and any other hdmi devices you might acquire) and one HDMI out to the TV. Works well and the sound from the A/V receiver / -way speaker system is excellent.

You need to get an HDMI switch.
I had the same issue and found an HDMI splitter at Walmart. Good luck!
An HDMI slitter won't work, a switch is needed.
Check your cable box some have a HDMI passthrough port.
Apple TV is not a substitute for Cable DVT or Satellite as it has no receiver/decode/tuner facility for local live TV.
