My 1st Generation Apple TV will not sync content from iTunes 11.3.1

I've revived an old 1st generation Apple TV to put some movies onto for this kids whilst we go away on holiday. Just to simplfy things I reset the Apple TV for factory settings and linked to my iTunes (11.3.1) library on my iMac running 10.9.1.

All seems fine linking the Apple TV to my iTunes library, however when I choose content to sync (movies only, I disable everything else via the custom sync settings), nothing syncs. It just says in the iTunes window that it is syncing, but when I check the My Movies option on the Apple TV 'I get the message of there are no movies on this App,e TV'. I sure from past usage that the Itunes window gives a message of syncing movies 1 of 12, 2 of 12 etc as it is progressing, but nothing.

All help appreciated.

Thanks.

Exactly. Apple, which markets itself as a company that values people who think and act differently, somehow can't seem to tolerate people who prefer an Apple TV with a hard drive. The 1st generation Apple TV is an amazing device that is pure genius, and it is so superior to subsequent generations in so many ways. But Apple can't make enough MONEY off of that concept, so they had to go and make the product worse by removing the hard drive. Now, it looks like they are trying to ditch the 1st generation's usefulness altogether. It's not like they can't make the new Yosemite/iTunes combination work with the 1st generation. It's that they don't want to. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't give Apple the benefit of the doubt anymore.

Oh, and be careful if you dare to criticize the almighty Apple. Was once my favorite company, but is no more. Nowadays, they prefer to do business just like all the rest, and they also censor critical comments because they don't like criticism. If they take away my Apple TV, then I am done with them after 30 years as a Mac user. I'm serious. This has me so peeved. There are plenty of other ways for me to store my lossless music files on a hard drive and play them through my stereo. I will just have to do it using a different operating system. Whether it's Android, Windows, or something else altogether doesn't matter to me, as long as it works!

I have been having issues for a while syncing certain content with my Gen 1 ATV. Even got the SD (720) version of the files and still nothing. It starts syncing then stops and nothing happens. The only HD (still 720) movie that works is one that i purchased through the itunes store on the ATV. Anything I have purchased through my computer that is HD (720) does not sync. I spent all morning on the phone with apple and they finally have to gather some data from my machine while we recreated the problem, so they could send it to their engineers to figure out. 3-4 days to get an answer so I hope they figure something out.

I know where you are coming from.

Resisted upgrading equipment and OS for fear of losing some much used, much beloved and **** effective applications.

Finally upgraded to a MacBook Pro Retina and then Yosemite and lost the use of iMovie HD, Eudora, Now Software Contact and Calendar; all are superior to available alternatives.

And, now, my 1st Generation Apple TV.

I am having the exact same problem. I can sync photo but nothing else. The only other thing I can do is remove something already on the machine and put the exact same thing back. I hope that they fix the issue so I can continue to use my ATV!

and since I have updated to Yosemite, I have had to fix all my Mail accounts as I couldn't send any emails....

I stumbled onto the same fix last night. After going to Settings, and then Computers on the Apple TV, I had to select the existing library and essentially replace it.

The new library did not include any recent home videos.

After more stumbling, I found that you need to push the cursor to the top of the screen and, when the menu bar appears, go to the "File" menu and select "Add to Library" and then select new movies to be added.

The new movies were added to the library but still would not synch.

After more stumbling, I found that I needed to create an Apple TV compatible version from the video now added to the Library.

Select the Movies icon at the top of the desktop and select the list view, then select the recently added home movie(s). After selecting the movie(s), push the cursor to the top of the screen and when the menu bar appears , go to the "File" menu and select "Create New Version" and then select "Create iPad or Apple TV Version." This adds what looks like and identical file to the list of movies, but is in fact a new version (the old version can be deleted but be sure that you are deleting the older version.)

After all this, you can synch with Apple TV and the newly added videos will appear on the Apple TV list.

I have found that selecting "Automatic Synch" or "Custom Synch" makes no difference, at least so far.

Tired of not getting any attention from Apple!

I have posted this on their Facebook page

I managed to finally solve my problem on my own. I did have an apple help desk on the phone walking me though different process but did not manage to solve my problem for me. In the end I worked out that I bought the HD version of the show and it was not compatible with my first generation apple TV, so after working this out I managed to download the SD version.

So to add to Tom Kenny's post if you are having trouble to sync with your first generation apple TV it is most likely that you need to reformat the movie either using the suggested method by Tom or using another third party tool.

My only gripe at the moment is that they moved the sync button to File --> Devices --> Sync and I hope that Apple will move the sync button back one day, so I can continue to enjoy a consistent experience in iTunes!
