My 1st Generation Apple TV will not sync content from iTunes 11.3.1

I've revived an old 1st generation Apple TV to put some movies onto for this kids whilst we go away on holiday. Just to simplfy things I reset the Apple TV for factory settings and linked to my iTunes (11.3.1) library on my iMac running 10.9.1.

All seems fine linking the Apple TV to my iTunes library, however when I choose content to sync (movies only, I disable everything else via the custom sync settings), nothing syncs. It just says in the iTunes window that it is syncing, but when I check the My Movies option on the Apple TV 'I get the message of there are no movies on this App,e TV'. I sure from past usage that the Itunes window gives a message of syncing movies 1 of 12, 2 of 12 etc as it is progressing, but nothing.

All help appreciated.

Thanks.

You could try going to Settings, and then Computers on the Apple TV, you have to select the existing library and essentially replace it.

The new library will probably not include any recent home videos.

Open iTunes and push the cursor to the top of the screen and, when the menu bar appears, go to the "File" menu and select "Add to Library" and then select new movies to be added.

The new movies will be added to the library but still won't synch an Apple TV compatible version must be created from the video now added to the Library.

Select the Movies icon at the top of the desktop and select the list view, then select the recently added home movie(s). After selecting the movie(s), push the cursor to the top of the screen and when the menu bar appears , go to the "File" menu and select "Create New Version" and then select "Create iPad or Apple TV Version." This adds what looks like and identical file to the list of movies, but is in fact a new version (the old version can be deleted but be sure that you are deleting the older version.)

After all this, you can synch with Apple TV and the newly added videos will appear on the Apple TV list.

I have found that selecting "Automatic Synch" or "Custom Synch" makes no difference, at least so far.

I have the same issue after installing a new SSD drive in my PC (not a MAC) and fresh install of Win7 Enterprise. iTunes version is 12.1.1.4 (64bit). Apple TV still works with the little remote or my iPhone remote app, but cannot sync iTunes. The Apple TV icon is there only settings and photos present in the left panel. I still have my old HD in my PC I can boot go into BIOS settings set to boot from the old HD and everything works. Apple broke 1st gen Apple TV with iTunes 12.1.1.4. Not sure how far back in releases to go to get it working again. I'm not happy about this.

I did go to "ATV "settings" -> "computers" disconnec my iTunes library. then reconnect with new code" didn't work for me. All the responses I see about do this or that are not options for me. I have Win7 with iTunes 12.1.1.4 and ATV 1st Gen and everything in iTunes is grayed out relate to ATV with the exception of serial # which when I click on it displays the ip address. File > devices > Sync & Transfer Pictures is grayed. It is totally broken. But if I boot from my original hard drive with my earlier version of iTunes everything works. Nothing in the network has changed it is Ethernet hardwired not wifi.

OK after doing this a second time now my 1st Gen ATV is working on my new install of Win7 with iTunes 12.1.1.4. Everything is grayed out in File > devices > Sync & Transfer Pictures until I did what was suggested by Matt McIntyre in his post of Mar3.

The first time I disconnected I didn't fully remove the library and add it again. Of course when I added it again iTunes had to re-sync with ATV and nearly 10,000 songs took a while. I just went to bed and it was done in the morning. Works now.

Thanks Matt

Hi GreekAviator,

I am having exactly the same issue as you. I have recently bought new movies on iTunes using my macbook air and I am trying to sync them to my ATV 1st Generation but they are not syncing. I have changed the version of the video to SD but they are still not syncing from my computer to the ATV.

I was wondering if Apple came back to you with a solution?

Regards

James
