Q: Unable To Open Document. Newer Version of Pages Needed?

Thanks to IOS 7 and whatever updates -- free mind you that I have installed on my iPad, I can now no longer open Pages documents I have created on the iPad on my Mac...from what I understand, if I was using Office/MS Word I would be able to open it. Since I can't print from my stupid iPad due to lack of AirPort, I am stuck. It looks like the Apple Dumpling Gang is attempting to hold me up for another version of iWork and 40 bucks. Way to go, you so and sos!

App store says no updates in the meantime, so this is really weird. I am thinking the 40 bucks would be a waste of money?

iWork/Pages, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Maverick upgrade available

Don't know where you get the $40 from.

The version of Pages that is compatible with your iPad will only run under OS 10.9 Mavericks.  Mavericks is a free upgrade, and once you upgrade to it the App Store will download the new version of Pages (and Numbers and Keynote) the next time it does an update.

If portability is your primary concern, then this is the way to go, providing your computer is new enough to support the Mavericks system.

BUT, you should note that the newest version of Pages (and Numbers) no longer support many, many features that were available in iWork '09.  It is possible to use both versions on a Mavericks system, but there are several complications.  Also you may have software that will no longer run under Mavericks.  So you should investigate this before you make your decision, and do a backup before you upgrade if that is your choice.

You are trying to open a Pages 5 document in Pages 09, which you still have on your computer. There are many threads about this issue in this forum. The  icon you have has change the look but not the link to the older application

Did you have it before upgrading to Mavericks and PAges 5? If so you have it in Applications/iWork 09 folder.

You do have Pages '09 installed. You are just alternating between the new and old versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages '09 won't open anything saved in Pages 5, iOS7 or iCloud.

Pages 5 won't open Pages 8, and damages/alters Pages '09 files and has intermittent problems with everything else.

Did you ever have the previous versions of iWork Apps on your Mac?

When "it" tells you you need the latest version of Pages to open the file, what is "it"?

    Finder or Pages?

If you just double clicked on the file I am pretty sure it is because it is trying to open it with the older version, wherever it may be.

The two versions of Pages look distinctively different when starting up. it should be pretty obvious which one you are in.

Thanks, again. Still mulling it over. The original price for the complete iWorks was I believe 39.99 if you had it installed when you bought the Mac...ergo the comment about 40.00.

iWork (singular) '09 is still available form Amazon and quite cheap.

Don't think the complete iWork '09 was ever as cheap as $39.99.

Beware of the new version of Pages if you are considering editing Pages documents you did in the old version or copying sections or pages over, because you won't be able to!  I would stick to the old version of Pages (Pages 09), which works in Maverick too.

This review explains that the only thing linking the old Pages '09 with the new "upgrade" is the name. He suggests that in fact they are 2 completly different, and so far, incompatible programs.

I think the price was 60 or 70 dollars.

I've got iWorks 09, but after an upgrade to OS X 10.9.2 the icons in the dock were still pointing to the old iWorks applications, but if you follow the link to the App Store it tells you that you got the latest version!

Really confusing, please could Apple take a notice? Thank you for the post.
