Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Why is aperture crashing on my brand new 27" iMac ?

I just purchased a new 27" imac:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac14,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i7

Processor Speed: 3.5 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 8 MB

Memory: 16 GB

I purchased this to replace my 2008 MBP whish was too slow for editing large files. I saved up to buy this new machine and am at wit's end already.

I installed Aperture (original disc and upgrade disc, then did upgrade to latest version via ap store.

I imported files from one SD card (less than 900 files) into Aperture. They are on my drive, not an external. I have not even set up time

I have opened iphoto and opened photostream for that, but not for Aperture.

I have not installed any plugins for Aperture--though I own Photomatix and am waiting to install it until this is resolved.

I did not transfer anything from my previous machine, nor use migration assistant as I wanted this to be very clean. I've only set up two email addresses in mail--seriously I'm keeping this machine clean.

SO...My first Aperture session resulted in a spontaneous re-boot. Since then, Aperture has crashed (and I've sent a report) each of the 4 or 5 times I've tried to use it. I'm doing basic things like cropping, viewing with and without the loupe, rotating through view between thumbnails, full screen and

What gives?!

THE WHOLE REASON I SPENT THIS MUCH MONEY IS TO USE APERTURE TO EDIT PHOTOS.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

What does the crash report say? Can you please post the first 50 lines here?

Your download of the update may have been incomplete. I'd reinstall Aperture.

then did upgrade to latest version via ap store.

If you are now running Aperture 3.5.1, then Aperture should be showing as installed in the Purchased tab of the AppStore. In that case you should be able to reinstall by simply deleting Aperture from the "Applications" folder (don't empty the Trash) and then downloading again from the AppStore. Does that work?

I did not copy the crash reports and can't remember how to find them--not something i've had experience with in the past and I'm pretty much self-taught. I guess I'll try deleting it and downloading again.

I did not try to repair the library, given the fact that while doing a repair may fix the continued crashing, is that going to address the problem that caused the original re-boot in the first place? Since the library was brand new at that point.... I thought making changes/adjustments after the fact might cloud the issue with diagnostics. Perhaps not...just that since it's a pretty virginal machine....

I did not copy the crash reports and can't remember how to find them-

The application "Console" will find the crash reports for you. The Console is in the subfolder "Utilities" in your Applications folder.

If you launch, click the "Show Log list" icon in the toolbar, if the sidebar with the log files it not showing. The crash report should be listed in the "System diagnostic reports" section of the sidebar or the "User diagnostic report.

Look for logfiles with a recent date and "crash" or "panic" in the name, no "Hang" files, please.

User uploaded file

I see, you found your logs already.

Looking at the reports you found -

the crashes are all related to graphics:

  1. The first crash in the CoreImage library:
    com.apple.CoreImage 0x00007fff90f736e1 -[CIFilter setValue:forKey:] + 76
  2. The second crash in the CoreImage library:

2 com.apple.CoreImage 0x00007fff8d144fd4 FETreeContext::newImage(FEImage*, CGColorSpace*) + 132

The kernel panic happens in the drivers for your graphic cards:

Keep the panic report, just in case there should be a problem with your graphics card

dependency: com.apple.nvidia.driver.NVDAResman(8.1.8)[3A2A3C2D-E129-3190-A682-E831B38F0FBF] @0xffffff7f95a45000

What these reports do indicate for me is, that your crashes are happening when images need to be processed or renderend on your display. Perhaps you have imported an image or video that cannot be processed or the library needs repairing. Or it could be a problem with the System or your Graphics Card.

Check, if a new Aperture library with some new photos imported will work better. If yes, then your current Aperture library has a problem.

If a new Aperture library does not help, do the reinstall of Aperture. You do not sync with Facebook or Flickr, or any other accounts?

Have you changed any settings in your current user account? If not, reinstall Mavericks, if reinstalling Aperture did not help.

You will need to get your backups setup, before doing a system reinstall.

Post back after testing with the new Aperture library and reinstalling Aperture.

Thank you so much for the response!

I have not done anything to sync Aperture to anything. I chose not to use it for Flickr or facebook or any other accounts. I have not yet even linked to photostream and I don't plan to. I really want to reserve for serious photography and use iphoto for "recreational" use.

I felt certain that it had crashed more than those two times, but don't see other similar reports. A screen capture shows all the logs.

I really have made few changes since I took the machine from it's box. I have set up the email accounts and imported my contacts, installed Aperture, set up my time capsule for network use and imported 800+photos; I did synch iphoto with my photostream and install the duckduckgo.com plug in for safari, and install firefox as an additional browser, also an updated version of flash.

I will try your suggestions tomorrow after I return home from work and see if they resolve the issue. Many thanks for you kindness!

In the folder "Applications > Utilities" is another diagnostic program "Activity Monitor".

Launch it , before you are starting with Aperture.

In the Activitiy Monitor keep an eye on the "Memory used". If you are seeing, that the processing are using nearly all of the available memory, i.e. 15,9 GB of the 16 GB you are having in your Mac, quit Aperture and restart your system, before everything crashes. Look at this thread:

Aperture 3.5.1 and Mavericks memory leak. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5590335?start=0&tstart=0

But since your Mac is very new and you probably are still having warranty or Apple Care protection, I'd get the Graphics Card checked at the nearest genius Bar - just to file your problem, while you are still having warranty.

Thank you SO much. I repaired the aperture library, per instructions, and imported photos from another SD card and worked in both of the projects--the first one and the newly imported one. I have had no issues yet. I will try the activity monitor tomorrow and observe. I'm loath to box it up and transport it to the genius bar, but I will if the activity monitor shows signs. I'll also begin backing up, now that I'm starting to use it!

Again, thank you both SO much for your help, léonie and dfrancefort. Tomorrow I'm going back to editing my F1 photos from November USGP.🙂

I am seeing the same crash on my new (Nov 2013) i7 iMac 27" with AP 3.5.1 :-(

crashlog looks the same:

Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

Exception Codes: EXC_I386_GPFLT

Application Specific Information:

objc_msgSend() selector name: isKindOfClass:

4 com.apple.AppKit 0x00007fff8ad70c0e -[NSView _recursiveDisplayAllDirtyWithLockFocus:visRect:]

my machine has only 8GB RAM, but Aperture never crashed with the same library on my late 2008 MacBook with 8GB. I assume it has to do with the graphics driver.

I've been sending crash logs to Apple for the last couple of days, so hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Why is aperture crashing on my brand new 27" iMac ?
