When I try to access email on my iphone there are 868 messages so I have turned 'Fetch new data' off. How do I delete these old messages and start afresh receiving only email from today?

With a POP3 account like Telstra you can't just delete the email off the server to delete if from your phone as you can with IMAP accounts like iCloud email. Unfortunately, you'll have to open the inbox on your phone, tap Edit, tap all the email, then tap the trash icon in order to delete it.
Does this have to be done individually or is there some way to select all emails to delete?
You'll have to tap each one. If it were an IMAP account you could go to your webmail and select them all at once, but there is no "select all" option for deleting on an iOS device (only to mark all as read/unread or flagged/unflagged).
