I dunno.
Perhaps since the upgrade to 10.1, whenever I display the angles, performance drops to zero and everything staggers.
Project is 3 and 4 track multicam at 1920 x 1080 on an iMac 2011 with 16 Gb
All media is on a 2 Tb external RAID and I'm using Apple ProRes 422 so I don't think proxies will help.
Its big ... but it was working before.
What can I do ?

Proxies are much smaller files. Depending on the formats you're using, they can be half resolution and they are more heavily compressed. Because they're much lower data rate than most formats multicam can handle more streams more easily.
I thought proxies were in pro res 422 and that if I encoded everything to pro res that it would be better performance it would avoid duplicates, library management, disk space etc.
They may be in ProRes 422 (Proxy) codec, and typically a quarter of the frame size - e.g. if the original is 1920x1080 the proxy may be 960x540 - that will make for much smaller file sizes.
They're in ProRes Proxy 422. Basically the same code more heavily compressed and half frame resolution. Optimized is PR422.

since if the issue is multicam its too late to build proxies and I only have 600 Gb left ...
You may need to only create proxies for the clips used in the multicam, and since this is where you are feeling the problem, I guess it is worth a try. Do it for a small multicam clip and see how it goes.
OKAY ..... Prores Proxy 422 is not just Prores 422.
I assume then if I encode all media to that, I won't need proxies ...

it will take a lot of space and time if I elect to create them ...
how could I estimate that ?

There are many reasons why a clip might need to be rendered; not matching the project properties is one if them, and not uncommon when working in multicam where media from different cameras in different formats are often mixed.
Wondering if I should be editing in 1920 x 1080 at all, since the final output is a DVD ... so proxies at 960 x 540 would be fine. However if I want to output to blu-ray or master file at full resolution, I assume the proxy system outputs in full resolution whereas re-encoding the originals limits the final output resolution.

I'd say figure on about 40 Mbps for Proxy. (That's bits per sec – not bytes.)
Just to point out that you indicated you have 600GB for free space. There shouldn't be a problem – even with 4 streams. You can always trash them after you're finished cutting.
