GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 6,2

15-inch, Mid 2010

2,66 GHz Intel Core i7

No upgrades, stock machine.

I have two MBP 6,2 2010; one of them was crashing from time to time (Kernel/GPU Panic); running the CINEBENCH R15 OpenGL Test was triggering the crash (at the start of the test); after replacing the capacitor that feeds the GPU and VRAM the crash is gone away; the CINEBENCH Test can be run multiple times without crashing!

Hello! Iam Mac User is 25 years! This is GPU Panic ( Kernel Panic) Is hard ware problem!!! Is not solutions . This is problem at Apple computer company enginer. It has happened to me with 2 mac book pro. This is quality problem. Apple never solves this ******* problem! The solution is to go to an Apple Store and claim the rights. If you have apple care (which does not have a cheap price) then have them change. I did this and complained a lot until they changed my laptop.

Jan 7, 2014 7:05 AM in response to cfbbaer

Read this. It's a known problem with that model. I know, I have one.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You might be able to get it replaced even if it's outside the 3 years. Some users have. You'll just have to try at the Genius Bar.

In the meantime, try downloading gfxstatus and forcing the graphics to Intel.

http://gfx.io

It's a hardware problem. Other than gfxstatus, there's no fix.

Jan 7, 2014 8:21 AM in response to BobRz

Hello BobRz,

I'll give gfxstatus a try. Hope forcing Intel won't slow down too much my work.

The problem with the Apple Store is that I'm not in the US. No official Apple Stores here.

The authorized service says only Apple can make that call. I called Apple here and although they were very nice, they said they could not make an exception. I get their point, I just don't quite agree with it. Computers break down over time, I'm fine with that. But if they recognize they messed up in the first place, then they should take respnosibility.

Let's see how gfxstatus does.

Thanks!

Thank the lord. The part and work was about 500.

Hy JJRoger, how did you get this free replacement? I've just bought a used MBP (15" mid-2010) and after upgrade to MLion the problems started.

The first owner bought this MBP a few months over the 3 years extended guarantee.

I'm from Brazil, and I just have an Authorized Service Provider to go.

My troubleshoot so far:

History:

  • I have been baffled with the GPU panic for quite some time especially noticable after Maverick installed ( I think I have the situation when using Mountain Lion but very rare)
  • I have my MBP Mid 2010 i7 2.66Ghz High-Res, aftermarket 8GB ram + 256GB SSD
  • This machine run 24/7 (no sleep, only monitor turn off after 30 minutes)
  • Mini display port connected to a monitor to extend the landscape
  • One USB port connected to 7 port USB 2.0 hub
  • Bluetooth mouse, keyboard, headphones
  • Heavy rendering sometime, heavy network traffic (iPhoto 30,000+ photos, Aperture 10,000+ photos & [iTunes media] folder with 400+ videos on NAS over Gigabit ethernet)
  • Like most people suggested, to take MBP to genius bar, out of warranty (close to 4 yrs), asking CND$690 to replace logic board. Didn't do it because too expensive

Observation:

  • For long time, when first time insert a SD card, it didn't reconized, need to pull it out and reinsert. Occaionally happend to USB stick too. other USB devices seems unaffected. This happed before Maverick installed
  • Someone suggested [system preference] > [energy saver] > uncheck [Automatic graphics switching]. Still happening
  • Someone suggested gfxCardStatus, its just software option of the above
  • Even using gfsCardStatus, force integrated graphics (single monitor), still panic
  • Unplug everything including the power, seems better in both graphics mode
  • Plug back each item (Power, ethernet, display port external display, USB) one by one, troubleshoot by running each additional item for couple days, seems better (you get once in 2 days or so, random)

Until:

  • I plug in iPhone to sync, the MBP panic like before,
  • Or using USB port to recharge something, its panic
  • Again, it is so random, doesn't mean that it happen right after you plug in, but it happen more frequent than not having iPhone (iPad or whatever) to plug in.

Speculation:

  • Something related to the Power and USB port under Maverick (Powernap maybe)
  • Or something related to iDevice when plug in (S/W issue)

Suggestion:

  • I haven't try 10.9.3 (beta) as of to date, it saids fixed some power issue, if you are developer, try it out
  • Try not having any iDevice to plug-in at all and observe for couple days.
  • Even try not to have any USB thing plug in, leave them empty and observe for couple days.
  • If this give better stability, we are on the same boat
  • I have the MBP running non-stop without panicking for 4 days until I plug in my iPhone.
  • It saved me $690, so far so good.

Followups:

  • My next step will be revert it back to Mountain Lion and test
  • Test on my aftermarket RAM, replacing with different brand and size
  • Revert back to HDD (I don't think it is related, but if above 2 are failed, I will do so)

Please stay tuned.

Certain samples of the MacBook Pro 6,2 2010 model were built with Graphics chips that contained a Latent Defect. It has been there since they were manufactured.

When later versions of Mac OS X are run, these defects show themselves. The genius Bar has a test for the Latent Defect that has always been in these chips. It is called the VST test. it takes only a few minutes to run, and they should be happy to run it for you while you watch. Their standard overnight diagnostic does NOT find the Latent Defect.

There WAS a recall program in place, but its stated time has run out. Some Users in some stores are getting some help from the store manager to lessen the cost of replacement. Lately, reports are that US$350 one-week depot-repair can be made available (when usually it is Not available to you).

The original program is described in this article:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

.

Mar 16, 2014 9:04 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Thanks, I am fully aware of the problem, and options that we could have here, I had the "Genius" to check up in January 2014 (about 2 months after Maverick launch), they did reinstalled the MAC OS for me (ran the basic Hardware test though, no VST), which it didn't help. I gave second try on different store, They give us no option except to pay $690 to replace logic board, no bargain on prices.

The good thing is even when it panicked, screen will restored (almost) exactly where I left off, if it were PC, I am already throwing my computer and me out the window.

I actually don't feel upset about this, I loved Apple products so much, as it is like me that with short of cash, I have to drill down the problem without drilling down my pocket. It is annoyed to have computer restart so random and frequent and hope if Apple would do something on software to "fix" or "reroute" the "bug" due to a factory defect, because seems that I am not the only one. An extended recall program would be nice.

Mar 17, 2014 6:02 AM in response to bunlo

Hi Bunlo, I'm suffering from the same situation here with my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 15" i7. I totally agree with you, Apple could do something to help us, but until now, I didn't see any sort of that.

About the gfxcardstatus, it really worked for me, but, you have to download an old version, because the new one doesn't work well for our purposes. The new version doesn't stay all the time in the integrated video mode, check their explanation:

"gfxCardStatus v2.3 and above actively prevents you from switching to Integrated Only mode when any apps are in the Dependencies list (or if you have an external display plugged in). This is because if you were to do this, your discrete GPU would actually stay powered on, even though you've switched to the integrated GPU."

http://gfx.io/switching.html#power-source-based-switching

So, after reading that, I managed to download an old version (I'm not with my mac here, but I can tell you later whtat version is), and now I have been able to work with my macbook pro for almost three months without kernel panics. The biggest problem is that using integrate only, you won't be able to plug an external monitor.

Hope it can help you.

Mar 18, 2014 10:58 AM in response to Oberdan

Oberdan could you tell me what version of GFXcardstatus you're having luck with? I saw that this can help fix this gpu panic somewhere else and I tried it, but now I'm thinking I didn't have the right version. I'd love to try out the version you're talking about since you seem to have good luck with it. Also, are you using the "discrete only" or "integrated only" option?

Add me to the list of panicing 2010 MBP's. I've tried disabling dynamic graphics switching in system preferences but that hasn't seem to do anything. I've tried a full clean install of OSX, no luck.

Brought it in several times to two different apple stores stating that it seems to be a common issue with my model. At first they said it would be around $600, but eventually they dropped it to the flat-rate for repairs (I think $310 or so). I still don't feel like I should be responsible for paying for this, so I might try to fight it more. I'd like to try oberdan's method and see if that helps.

Hi Joe, I'll do better, I'll share the version that I'm using.

Yesterday I used the Macbook Pro for five continuous hours, without any problem. I really believe that the problem is solved, or at least, reduced, because I'm not able to use my external monitor anymore.

In order to work, you need to use the "integrated only" option. And, again (sorry) I'm not with my Macbook here now, but I remember that you need set one option that will automaticaly restore your preferences when the system reboots, something like "remember my last settings".

You can download the gfxcardstatus version 2.1 in the link below:

Please, tell me if it helps.

Later, I'll write an article about that, in order to try helping other unlucky guys like us :(.
