Mavericks Mail won't download new messages from Gmail accounts until restarted

Hi, I’m writing because on two Macs we have running Mavericks 10.9.1 (an iMac and a MacBook Pro), we are having a slightly frustrating problem with two Gmail accounts in Mail, where Mail will just stop downloading new messages from one or both of our accounts, until we restart Mail. I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue and if anyone might know any possible fixes for it? Thanks so much!

I am wondering if this problem is specific to certain hardware/software configurations? I cannot imagine why Apple hasn't fixed it otherwise.

Or maybe it's something very specific about Gmail settings, although I've changed them to about 5 different things.

Here are the machines I am constantly having this problem on, with Gmail:

1) A mid-2011 iMac with 10.9.3

2) A late-2012 iMac with 10.9.3

Also, this problem didn't occur for me until AFTER I applied the "fix mail" update. In other words, I didn't have this problem with 10.9.0! Figures.

The 10.9.3 update which just came out COMPLETELY FIXED this problem for me - after about 6 months of unreliable gmail message fetching on my iMac and Air. New mail from my several gmail accounts shows up immeditately on my Macs now, just like it always does on my iPhone. (and like it did before this mess started)

I recommend getting the update. It might fix your issues too.

Well, I'm glad to hear things are working for some folks. But I have 10.9.3 Mavericks and 7.3 Mail and I am still having trouble with my Macbook Pro. My old white Macbook still syncs both my ISP pop account and gmail account using Mavericks, but the new machine only seems to get the gmail unless I stop and start Mail.

I have tried keeping the Macbook Mail closed in case it was marking them read, so they wouldn't download from the mail server. (I double checked those settings on the old machine, but I thought it was worth testing anyway) But that didn't help either. Besides, if that was the problem, stopping and starting Mail wouldn't fix it, right?

As others noted, the Connection Doctor does not see an issue with the connections. Typical doctor... can't diagnose anything until it is terminal. :-)

I am open to suggestions for what to try next.

Thanks,

Just for comfort... You are not the only one!

I also have the latest versions of the OS and Mail and nothing. For what I have seen the problem occurs when I start reading emails from iphone/ipad (deleting also) and then switch back to my iMac.

I have to restart Mail (and this doesn't always works!).

I am resigned and praying for Apple to fix this in Yosemite.

I am completely FRUSTRATED!

One week this has been happening. My Gmail is not loading on my iMac, iPhone and iPad.

Spent days with level 2-tier tech support. I am on 10.9.3

As an experiment, I created a brand new gmail. Tested it out on all 3 - and POOF! it worked in a flash!

I went back and put my original gmail address in and nothing but TROUBLE!

What is going on here?

Apple said to call "google" and that my gmail account is not working right.

Why would one email address be totally fine, and not another?

FYI: I tried my gmail on my girlfriends iPhone and it did NOT go through. I tried her gmail on MY iphone and it worked!

Help???

Brian

I dealt with this problem for nearly a year plus other issues, like latency and crashes.

Using gmail.com is the best route to take.

It took me some time to get used to it as my muscle memory was attuned to osx mail but it not I couldn't imagine going back.

Here are a few tips if you are planning to make the transition

  1. Turn on the preview extensions - from settings to go labs and search on preview
  2. Turn on hot keys - also in settings
    1. The e key is archive which is "delete" in gmail world
    2. The v key is move, which pops up the lables dialog
    3. The c key is create new message
  3. One gotcha is hte tab key actually tabs around instaed of indenting, so watch out for that.
