My Mac book pro has all the sudden started running slow and freezing up all the time , any ideas why or what to do

Hello ,

I am not very good with tech things , I have a Mac Book Pro and have had it for almost two years with no problems. Now for the past week or so it has started running extremely slow and freezing up all the time. I am not really sure what is going on but is there any advice on something to do or any idea what could be wrong.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), iOS 7.0.4

A slow Mac is usually caused by either incompatible 3rd-party software or an unhealthy SSD/disk. There are other causes but these are the top two. An OS upgrade can reveal either of these potentially lurking problems. Have you upgraded the OS or installed any 3rd-party software or plugins in the last week or so? If so that may lead down the software compatibility route. Otherwise it may be a disk issue.

Make sure you have a current backup in case the SSD/disk is failing. You should always have a current backup anyway. If you do not have a Time Machine or other backup, start one. You will need an external drive you will dedicated to the backup.

Hardware:

Check the health of your disk using Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

Disk Utility > Select the upper left disk icon > Look at the S.M.A.R.T. status >

If it does not say “Verified” then the SSD/disk will need to be replaced. Definitely backup your system.

Next, select the volume icon slightly indented to the right usually labeled “Macintosh HD” > Verify Disk

If it finishes with "The Volume XXX appears to be OK.” then the filesystem is healthy.

See http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html for pictorial instructions.

If not then repair the system disk

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836

If the repair was not sufficient, reinstall OS X.

OS X or Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks: Reinstall OS X

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13871

Software:

Boot in Safe Mode.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US

It will boot and shutdown slower than normal.

Does the problem go away in Safe Mode?

If so then there are Login Items that may be causing the problem.

 > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Click on your user name > Login Items

Use “-“ to remove items you do not need.

Did that resolve the problem?

Try and SMC Reset.

If it is still sick run http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and post the results. We are looking for incompatible software such as kernel extensions that may have slowed down the system.
