Need an owner password to save certain documents. This is new since I migrated from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8. Nothing I have tried works. Has anyone else seen this and know what is required?

If you enable FileVault it may limit access to some folders.
If you aren't following this tip, other folders may not be accessible:
Thanks for your response. Are you saying that when I made the change I may have somehow enabled FileVault and, if so, where would I find it to check please? Meantime, FYI I can access documents and even print them, just can't save them without the owner password. BTW, I tried searching for FileVault and nothing came up.
Normally someone would know if they enabled FileVault unless they bought the machine third hand.
It is in Apple menu -> System Preferences under either its own name, or Security.
Thanks again.
My son bought the computer for me several years ago and set it up for me. Unfortunately neither he nor I recall the original password(s). In December when I went to an Apple Store and installed 10.6.8. I was asked for the original password which, of course, I didn't know.
Basis your last post I have now gone to the System Preferences and under Accounts there appear to be two, i.e. My Account with my name below and Admin underneath and Other Accounts showing Guest Account with Sharing Only underneath. Though there is an option to Change Password, I haven't tried...and presumably without the old password, I won't be able to anyway. All that said, does it make sense that somehow I would have enabled FileVault without realizing it? I am the only person who uses this computer...with the exception of my son when he first set it up.
In any case, I don't see any access to FileVault under Security, unless I'm missing something?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274 should help you find what you need to know.
I really do appreciate you taking the time to respond to me but I still don't understand whether my current inability to save certain documents (which I had no problem saving previously) is the result of "permissions" associated with 10.6.8 - whether via FileVault or elsewhere.
Bottom line, I'm prepared to try to modify settings to facilitate document saving IF the "problem" is definitely the result of changing from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8. Is it?
That looks like the message seen when Preview tries to save a protected pdf. You might try
Are you able to use print preview to save a pdf version ?.
As expected, but worth a quick try.
I don't have a Leopard machine to compare, but presumably the older OS ignored at least some pdf protection features.
Thanks for trying. Much appreciated! I have read so much on this now, I have totally confused myself😢
I originally figured the owner password must be on the bank's end, but when they advised it wasn't, I figured it must be on mine and, since the only change on my machine was the move from 10.5.8. to 10.6.8., I figured that was the "culprit". Of course, that was entirely speculation on my part.
Bottom line, does it make sense to you that the owner password is something I control...or do you believe it is something the bank controls? After all, if I am jumping through hoops on something I can't "fix", I might as well give up now...
If a pdf is protected, that would usually be because the bank software made it so. If you can save other pdf files as you used to be able to, it seems likely that the change was at their end; unless Leopard's Preview ignores such protection, which I don't recall it doing, but cannot check here.
Thanks, seemed logical to me. But I just "tested" it on another computer (PC) and I was able to save it and send it from there, i.e. no problem opening/saving the PDF on the other computer or with sending the saved PDF via email...but once email with attachment received, couldn't save the pdf on my macbook pro (can still view AND print it, just can't save it), so presumably it is some sort of an issue with the leopard software.
Maybe a stupid question, but is the "owner password" the same as the administrator password?
