Since I updated from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8, I now need an owner password to save certain documents that I could save previously without a password. Nothing I have tried works. Has anyone else seen this and know what is required?

I presume that other pdf files work as expected ?. The message refers to an owner password set when the pdf was created or edited, not an OS X user. Perhaps someone here with Leopard can test a protected pdf.
Sorry for the late response. Yes, so far all other pdf files work as expected and I can save "normally". In those cases, the options include Save as PDF. But for these bank statements, that option doesn't display on the File drop down menu. I initially assumed the problem was because of "permissions" set when the document was created by the bank, but why then can I save it on a PC but not on my MAC? Doesn't seem to make sense...does it? Thanks again for all your help on this!
I have no PC to check with, but since the file is readable, I'd think there's no way the creator can 'force' an application not to save what it reads, so presumably the PC app is ignoring the protected status.
OK...so I think you are saying that the "limitation" is one created by the document creator...but that both PC's and earlier versions of OS X "ignored" that...correct? In other words, still not something I can over-ride but something I need to have the original document creator "fix"?
Yes, that's what I mean. Pressing Command I in Preview should bring up an info window which includes ownership & edit/print permission details, which may confirm what you've found.
Unfortunately although I can access info about the document, I don't see any reference to edit/print permission. I have copied part of the window, leaving out the identifying info but, for some reason, I can't insert a copy here (although I have inserted similar screen shots earlier today). Weird...I'm going to call it a day and see if any of this makes any more sense tomorrow. Thanks again!
Just to let you know, you're not alone Cathy. I have exactly the same problem. And for probably exactly the same reason. Even more confusingly, I do remember my password...and it still doesn't work!!
was this issue resolved for you? have the same problem..unable to save a password protected pdf file without owner's password. can download and view...just cannot save.
