could not unmount disk

Usually caused by having something Open on the disk.

Try selecting the disk and dragging it to the trash or clicking the Eject Icon in a Finder window. It may tell you the name of a file that is in use.

Thanks to everyone including but not limited to: RonE321, Dan562, and thewomandirector. The solution to this problem was indeed (1) to download the WD utility first (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=217&sid=157&lang=en); (2) erase the entire volume; and (3) select the same volume as an available disk for Time Machine backup when prompted. So far, so good, but still in "preparing backup" phase. Will update as soon as I have a complete backup. Thank you all again. Saved me a lot of stress and $100.00.
