Fitness App Shuts Down During Run

Hi everyone! I have a Nano 7th gen, and it recently developed a problem where, when using the Fitness app, it shuts down with about a minute left in the run. The iPod completely powers off--this isn't an issue with the app just crashing. I've power cycled off the iPod a few times, but it's still happening. It seems like the next step would be to restore the factory settings, but I'm hoping to avoid that because (1) I don't want to lose all of my saved runs, and (2) I don't want to have to recalibrate it again. Anyone else have a similar problem? Thanks!

It is not a hardware problem. I already had a Genius reload the iPod SW on my iPod (they took it a level lower than we can do at iTunes). It didn't work. Apple then replaced the iPod and the reset happened on my very first run with the new iPod. Thus, it followed despite a HW change. Moreover, I tried to calibrate a new sensor and the iPod resets at exactly .25 miles in the calibration process.

Apple, can you help?

I have this problem as well. I've tried resetting and reloading and that doesn't work.

I use the sensor. I have the female voice give feedback.

The problem occurs when I check where I am by pushing the button on the top. The voice tells me the run statistics and then the whole thing reboots, losing my run.

The problem occurs on the road and on the treadmill. My runs are either 45 minutes or longer or 4 and a half miles or farther. The problem occurs more than halfway into the workout.

Follow up post to my original:

I have turned off the voice and set the run distance 1 mile further than my planned run. Between the two actions, I have avoided the dreaded "reset". I'd like to have the voice back, but it's not worth losing my entire run.

I continue having an issue syncing my runs via iTunes to the Nike + site (which has been "in maintenance" frequently). I'll wait that one out as I still have the history on my iPod.

For me, just turning off the voice has done the trick. Although I agree, I would like to have the voice back.

I'm not sure exactly how to engage with Apple about this. Clearly going to the Genius Bar does no good. Another poster said she got no help when she sent her iPod in for repair. You would think Apple would be monitoring these message boards for problems like this so they can be added to their backlog of items to be addressed in their upcoming firmware releases. If they are monitoring these boards, it would be DARN HELPFUL IF THEY WOULD ACKNOWLEDGE THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG.

To take the focus off Apple a bit... I've also been extremely disappointed with the durability of Nike's running gear. Many moons ago, I tried using one of its pedometers that was slickly designed and clipped on to your shoe laces. It broke after about 3-5 runs. The Nike Sportsband was only good for about a year before it crapped out (it never fit into the USB port correctly anyway). I've had varying degrees of success using their Fitness app on Apple iPods (can't get the calibration right), and now there's this crap.

So why do I continue to use both products? At the end of the day the iPod is the best MP3 player on the market. And Nike's shoes (sans Nike+ accessories) continue to be the best running shoes on the market. What else are you supposed to do?

And...

So frustrated - and I thought it was me. So bad, I thought it was a hardware problem - was so, so frustrated I tossed the iPod Nano and bought another. To my surpise - today again ! So brand new iPod - did not solve the problem and at least 35k woth of workouts in the past week - puff - gone.

My guess ?

This just started happening after the new year. The only thing I can think of is an IOS update introduced this bug. This really, really qucks as I just WASTED good money on a brand new iPod only to have this issue - STILL !.

I have been on this system for 7 years without an issue. Forget the "Genius" bar. Nike should step up here and put the pressure on Apple. People are going to vote with their feet (no pun intended). At this point, I am about ready to jump ship to another platform - or just go back to Excel and manual tracking. Gee, then Nike+ wouldn't have access to my personal data anymore. What a loss for me :-).

Furious as I just threw good money after bad. Above post is correct. This system no longer functions.

Wow, I'm so glad I am not alone with this problem. Bought the nano (7g) after Christmas and the fitness app would crash at various times during a run when I pressed the top button or home button for feedback. Apple replaced it and same thing happened with that one. Apple then suggested I do a factory reset, so I did that. I didn't enter any personal data like height, weight, etc. It hasn't crashed yet, but I'm running with an old nano to record the run just in case. Great, now I'm running with 2 nanos, one on each hip. It's crazy! I'm tired of losing my run data and have no faith in the new nano. This is so frustrating because I bought the 7G just for running. I've been using the fitness app for years and never had a problem with my old nano. Apple said it's not a hardware issue so they can't do anything about it. So now what?

I am having this problem as well with my nano 7. It didn't happen before Christmas but is happening now. If I don't check to see what the time/distance/calories( or song change) are, then it is fine, but if I check any of these, it shuts down and doesn't save the run. It usually happens around the 35-40 minute mark. Very frustrating. I have lost alot of runs in the past few months.

What I find to be wierd, to say the least, is that last week (03/22/14) I ran 19km with my iPod Nano 7th Gen and it worked perfeclty fine until the finish (and believe me I advanced songs, requested info several times throughout the run, etc.). Today off to another 19km run and just when the female voice feedback tells me that there was only 400m to go...BANG...the Nano was reset and I lost my run. This is so frustrating, that I can´t even find the words to describe the feeling. When I arrived at home I automatically sent an e-mail to Nike+ support center, but I am not confident that they will be doing anything. I am glad though to find out through you guys that there is a solution (even though we loose the feedback we were receiving throughout our run), but what perplexes me the most is that you are all mentioning a firmware update in the begining of the year, I on the other hand never had this happen before until today (and I had 5 runs since last Saturday and it never crashed until today). I´ll keep a close watch on all your posts and inform you if I get any feedback from Nike.

@ paulva it doesn't matter if you use the male of female voice option. They both shut it down. I didn't have any issues until I did an update. So I've been running with out it, but it's not the same cause I keep having to check how far or how many minutes/mile left. I hope nike fixes this, been a faithful user for 6+ years and they a pushing me to find other options.
