Fitness App Shuts Down During Run

Hi everyone! I have a Nano 7th gen, and it recently developed a problem where, when using the Fitness app, it shuts down with about a minute left in the run. The iPod completely powers off--this isn't an issue with the app just crashing. I've power cycled off the iPod a few times, but it's still happening. It seems like the next step would be to restore the factory settings, but I'm hoping to avoid that because (1) I don't want to lose all of my saved runs, and (2) I don't want to have to recalibrate it again. Anyone else have a similar problem? Thanks!

I know this product has been discontinued, but the firmware still needs to be fixed. I just posted the following message here: Feedback - iPod nano - Apple


"I have owned four iPod nano 7g -- three were the 2012 model and one is the 2015 model. All crash with the most recent firmware if spoken feedback is on during a Nike run during the last few minutes of the run. They all crash.

"My 2012 7g nano models could be downgraded to 1.0.2 firmware, which did not have this issue. My new nano, which I purchased 15 days ago, has the 1.1.2 firmware and is not able to be downgraded to 1.0.2. This bug has not been fixed."

My wife just mentioned this to me today and I thought I would investigate. How disappointing to find that this is still an issue after 3 years. I have downgraded her to 1.0.2 in hopes that she can use the Nano 7G for the express purpose that it was purchased. I understand that Nanos aren't a cash cow anymore, but how much software development time would it really take to release an update for these to work properly with the voice feedback enabled?

I just bought my third iPod nano 7g. Both previous models were the 2012 version, which I happily downgraded to the 1.0.2 firmware because Apple NEVER fixed the problem. Like you, I cannot downgrade my brand new iPod nano 7G to the 1.0.2 firmware because it is there 2015 model.


Apple, c'mon. FIX THIS. It's been THREE YEARS since this appeared in upgraded firmware and it hasn't been fixed. I love the nano and am excited to have one of the new colors, but I can't use it on my runs. Please fix it!!!

I recommend following the steps in this troubleshooting assistant for your iPod nano model. I understand you have tried restarting your iPod, but I recommend perfoming the steps for the reset and other options first before restoring your iPod:

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately it didn't work. I'm just going to reset the factory settings because at this point, the Fitness app is worthless if it keeps shutting down before a run is complete. I'll keep this thread open to confirm whether resetting the factory settings fixes the problem. If it doesn't, then there's something else wrong with the iPod, and I'll need to open up a support case with Apple.

Opened a case with Apple about it. The phone tech thought it was a hardware problem, and since the iPod is still under warranty, she suggested taking it to a Genius Bar to have it replaced. The tech at the Genius Bar didn't really do a lot of troubleshooting, but he did notice other peculiarities with the iPod, such as it not acknowledging a power source when he plugged it directly into an outlet. So... Unfortunately I have no insights into why it's happening, but if you still have it under warranty, it appears you can just have it replaced.


I asked the Genius Bar tech if these Nanos were usually pretty stable, and he said he rarely sees problems with them. In fact mine was the first one he had to replace with this problem. For all purposes, my problem is "fixed" (replaced Nano, natch), but I'll keep this thread open in case anyone else continues having issues. If nothing else, Apple should be aware that others are experiencing the problem and will hopefully do something about it.

Ugh. This problem won't go away... Just tried doing a timed run with the new iPod replacement. It crashed and reboot 4 minutes before the run was supposed to end. So it's now back to the drawing board.


I'm wondering if this has something to do with the latest firmware update that came out in December. I didn't start having this problem until January (between the last firmware update and now, I had taken some time off from running).


@Zach9312: I might try to reset it in disk mode, but I just want to confirm with you if your problem went away after you did this.

Went back to the Genius Bar for a second time. She didn't have an answer for this and thinks that it is the firmware update, although she suggested trying a different Nike+ sensor in my shoe as this apparently caused a problem for the Nike GPS watch. I'm skeptical that the sensor is causing the problem, but since I have another one, there's no harm in trying it.


In the meantime, I found an article in the Apple Support knowledge base that sounds really similar to this problem:

The main difference is that this problem was identified for the 4th gen Nano. No one until now has reported it with the 7th gen. So my guess is that we're sh*t outta luck until Apple acknowledges this glitch and puts out another firmware update. When that happens, your guess is as good as mine.


I will test a few things such as running without the Spoken Feedback turned on to see if that provides an interim solution. But really, Apple needs to just fix this.

I sent my Ipod in by FedEx. They sent me an email the same day they received it and said they couldn't replicate the problem. Unless they ran 4 miles, I don't see how they could. I use my Ipod for my workouts at least 5 days a week for all of January. I had only 5 workouts saved. All the others weren't saved because the Ipod cycles off and deletes the information. And to top it off, my ear buds stopped working in one ear...

After striking out going to the Genius Bar a second time, and after reading over the knowledge base article I posted above, I did a timed run today for over 30 minutes with the **Spoken Feedback turned off.** And I can happily report that it worked. The Nano didn't reset, and it recorded the full run. It wasn't until I had read the knowledge base article that I realized that the Nano would reset right after the Spoken Feedback reported that I had reached a milestone (e.g., saying something like, "One minute left"). If you're running with the Spoken Feedback turned on, then turn it off and try it again. Ultimately, there's still a glitch with the software, but at least until Apple fixes it, there's at least a workaround to the problem (for me anyway--I hope this works for you).

@Flip_Cub ok so i tried timed, distance, and calorie runs and they didn't cause it to reset. When I was calibrating it didnt quit, but i ran 0.25 more miles than i was supposed to 😠. A little more never hurt.
