Fitness App Shuts Down During Run

Hi everyone! I have a Nano 7th gen, and it recently developed a problem where, when using the Fitness app, it shuts down with about a minute left in the run. The iPod completely powers off--this isn't an issue with the app just crashing. I've power cycled off the iPod a few times, but it's still happening. It seems like the next step would be to restore the factory settings, but I'm hoping to avoid that because (1) I don't want to lose all of my saved runs, and (2) I don't want to have to recalibrate it again. Anyone else have a similar problem? Thanks!

I have been having the same issue...I think what happens is that the software crashes when you somehow press a button or touch the screen while the spoken feedback is updating you on your run, and it happens most frequently at the end of the run because that is when the spoken feedback activates every minute for the last five minutes, increasing the chances that you press a button or touch the screen while it is 'talking'

Well, my iPod finally died...wouldn't sync or be recognized by windows or iTunes, and wouldn't charge. Tried a new sync/charge cable and still didn't work. I just bought a new 7th gen. from Bestbuy. I've left everything on including spoken feedback. So far, I've used it for three 10K runs, checking pace once or twice during each run and have had no issues.

II'll keep everybody updated every week or so, and we'll see what happens.

Hi Flip_Club, Hi everybody,

Actually I'm happy to see that this nike+ issue isn't present only on this side of the ocean... I'm writing from Europe :-)

Had this issue a couple of weeks ago, eventhough I'm not running as long as you guys, I noticed that for example for 7 min runs, the ipod nano 7th gen suddenly stops when there is 2 min left, and no recording at all !!

I never check during the run the time/calories/distance... but still even without touching (not even for volume) the nano stopped !

I'll try next time to shut the voice off, but that's a shame.

In the first place I wanted this iPod for music only, but when I started running, I found this app and the link on the nike+ really nice and helpful.

Thanks anyway to do so much effort to report it to Apple and Nike, hope that they will fix it !

I've been having this problem lately, and I just skimmed this thread but I don't think anyone has quite hit on exactly what's happening.

I've observed this several times now, and it's always when doing a custom time. The Fitness app apparently crashes as soon as the voiceover announces the time remaining between your custom time and whatever the nearest preset time is.

For example, today I had a 48-minute run set, and as I expected, as soon as the voiceover said "Three minutes remaining" the music stopped and the app crashed (didn't record my time, even after I continued to run for 3 more minutes). So as soon as I hit the nearest preset time -- 45 minutes -- the program crashed.

In the past I have had this happen on shorter times as well. It stopped with 1 minute left on a run that was 1 minute longer than one of the presets.

Not sure if this helps or if anyone at Apple is listening, but it is good to know I'm not the only one having this problem.

I have the same problem with my Gen 7. I've had it since February, but have been using the Nike Fitness app with sensor for years. This problem just started for me, however, last week. Same as most of the other posts, but mine occurs even with the basic settings on. I haven't yet tried a run with the Spoken Feedback off, but today 2.5 miles into the run, I pushed the button to listen to my time, and it shut off about 7-10 seconds later. I ran yesterday without pushing the button except to cycle songs, and it never shut off.

I'm glad to have found these posts as I was going to buy a new iPod. Guess I'll save my money and wait until the problem is resolved. *****. Just started training for a triathlon and now no voice to motivate and monitor. If anyone has any additional information, please help.

I'm from europe, gen 7 iPod Nano. I just use the Fitness app here, no Nike+ sensor.

I'm having a similar yet different issue.

Basically I don't get the reset automatically towards the end of the run as you guys have experienced (not that I remember at least) but I get a random reset, sometimes, when I press the button.

The voice normally tells you the current status of the run only after certain milestones have been reached, or you can activate it manually whenever you want when you press the button.

This is when the reset happens to me.

The odd thing is that it's very random, and usually happens only after I've ran for a bit, usually for 30 mins but sometimes even less.

So I guess even here in Europe we're not totally immune to this issue.

It's july 2014 and it's pretty sad to see that since january this issue hasn't been solved completely.

Any other suggestion or tip? Next time I'm going to run I'll try to turn the voice off, but since my error usually happens when I manually activate it I'm not sure if it's gonna help.

Just chiming in that I have the same issue. It happened sporadically on my previous 7th gen Ipod Nano. I bought that nano in March 2013 and didn't notice the problem until the 1.0.3 update (and I ran over 700 miles with that nano). It rebooted maybe 3-4 times, always after I'd pressed the top button to check my progress (spoken feedback).

That nano died a watery death (downpour while out running...got water under screen), and I just bought a new 7th gen nano. Came with 1.0.3 already installed. I've gone on two runs with it and both have rebooted late in the run, when spoken feedback was reporting .25 miles to go (not true, still had over 1 mile left). I haven't even been able to calibrate the thing because of the reboots. Both runs lost.

Based on what I've read here...I turned off spoken feedback and will see what happens on Wednesday's run. I always choose "distance" as the type of run in my nano, usually over 3 miles (these recent ones were in the 10k range). Fortunately for me, I run on a track/trail with markers every .25 mile, so I know how far I've gone (though I don't know my pace without the app).

I did report the issue using Apple's feedback link as marked it as a bug report. Anything to bring it to their attention.

I bought an ipod nano 7th generation 2 months ago. I have the same problem with the application. I brought my device to the after-sales service. I got back my ipod today but am still having the same problem. I made a try setting a run to 6 minutes and when the voice tells me I only have a minute left, the device switches off then turns on and nothing is being recorded in the application. I have scheduled a call with Apple tomorrow morning. I hope they will understand the problem and provide me with a solution... Otherwise, I will bring back my device to the after-sales service giving them more explanations (i.e. my test with the 6 minute run).

I was trying every which way to figure out how to use the fitness app. I don't run anymore, I walk. So I starting using the walking pedometer. Not really knowing that Nike doesn't record it. Which they should I'm sure a lot of people would like to see their progress. Anyway I wrote to Nike+ straightened out a few other issues I had. And finally figured out that why it wasn't recording on Nike+ that I wasn't using run. I did a test run on it and it too shut down and rebooted on it's own. I tried again and found it worked than. I have had nano 7th gen since about I would say March.

After reading everyone's responses I'm making sure voice is turned off. And I will do basic. I like to use the cycle too. That way it will record all of what I do.

I guess there is no solution for the moment unless they update the version. The Apple Genius Bar replaced my Ipod Nano with a previous version (version 1.02) and asked me not to upload the version 1.03 which is the one which doesn't work. The guy didn't seem aware of this bug but he said he will report this problem.

The minor problem with the version 1.02 is that when there is one minute left, the voice repeats twice "1 minute left" but the ipod does not shut down, so this is not a problem for me !

So, I suggest that you bring back your Ipod to a Genius Bar and ask for an Ipod with the version 1.02.

I have same problem.... I usually setup for calories and when 40 cal left to run iPod just resets and nothing is recorded. I also noticed that this issue happned when I set odd number of calories. When setup 30 min it worked OK.... The only solution I can think, - to set higher number of calories I want to burn.

But, seriously, APPLE this is RIDICULOUS that you cannot fix easy issue for so long !!!!

Same issue here. The fitness app shuts down on the following conditions:

- distance workout

- pressing centre button just before 400m to end (e.g. .43km to go) - feedback starts telling time, pace, etc.

- running to "400m to go point" before the spoken feedback has ended

- app shuts down and run is lost.

My settings:

- version = 1.0.3PC

- language = en_UK

- distances = km

- music = shuffle

- voice = female

- nike+ sensor = no

- heartbeat sensor = no

- remote = no

I have replicated this a couple of times. NOT pressing the centre button just before a countdown message avoids the issue.

This looks to me like a software issue and should be fixed. Apple, Nike?

Thanks and greetings from Singapore
