Messages won't connect to AIM

Very simple really, I enter all my correct details but Messages hangs on 'connecting' for a while and then just fails and displays 'Disconnected'. Now iChat isn't available I can no longer speak to contacts as I'm on a work computer that won't allow me to install Adium etc.

I've tried to connect to gmail too (Jabber?) to see if this works differently but this too ends up with a 'Disconnected'.

The second part is anecdotal to maybe give you more info, AIM is all I need to connect to. Please help...

Thanks in advance!

HI,

ISPs often run their own DNS servers.

Your router may show these in the set up pages.

They normally have an update process that gives them the new IP addresses of new locations and web pages.

The Network Utility on the Utilities folder and the Who Is tab shows the top of the tree places.

It would be unusual I would have thought for something that has been in operation like GoogleTalk not to be found on their servers but you never know.

Hi,

So what sort of Name are you using for the AIM login ?

One Registered at AIM ?

And Apple ID issued by Apple ?

If it is the second is the password 16 characters or Less ?

In the Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts > AIM Account > Server settings is it using SSL or not ?

What port does it say it is using ?

What is the server name ?

Hey Ralph, incredibly helpful already thank you! Ok so...

So what sort of Name are you using for the AIM login ? IT'S A SIMPLE ALIAS, SO A USERNAME RATHER THAN EMAIL LOG IN

One Registered at AIM ? IT IS REGISTERED AT AIM I BELIEVE, SET UP 6/7 YEARS AGO IN ANY CASE

And Apple ID issued by Apple ? THE APPLE ID WAS DEFINED BY ME

If it is the second is the password 16 characters or Less ? NOT RELEVANT NOW

In the Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts > AIM Account > Server settings is it using SSL or not ? THE BOX IT CHECKED FOR SSL

What port does it say it is using ? '443'

What is the server name ? 'api.oscar.aol.com'

HOPEFULLY HELPS?

Thanks again buddy...

Hi,

Ever since iChat was at version 1 (no video or Audio chats) it has been an AIM client and Apple issued IDs have been accepted as Valid AIM Screen Names.

Back then Apple was using the .Mac Service and you got @mac.com ending names.

Whether you have Trial Account, a paid for one or one that Lapsed they all work still as Valid AIM Names.

Then Apple changed to MobileMe and IDs ended with @me.com.
Trial Versions of these only worked for 60 Days (until you were charged or Actively ended the Trial).

You could link an older .Mac ID to the new @me.com ID for Mail purposes.

They remained two separate AIM valid Names.

More recently Apple have changed to iCloud.

Initially this created more @me.com name but on the iCloud Servers.

Later Apple started to issue @iCloud ending IDs

If you had an MobileMe @me.com ID and have not "converted" it to iCloud it will no longer work as a valid AIM name.

Due to changes in the app at iChat 6 which includes a second login to Apple as well as AIM (which in turn allows AIM to "see" the password) the iCloud issued @me.com and @icloud.com names will not work in iChat 5 or earlier.

This means that in Messages in Mountain Lion and Mavericks you can use your Apple ID to "register" for iMessages AND use it as An AIM account.

Back to your issue.

As a first step go to Messages > Preferences >Accounts

In the AIM account Untick the 'enable this Account" box to Log out.

Now go to the Server Settings tab

The Server name and Port plus the check boxes can now be changed.

Untick the SSL option and then Log back in again.

Hi,

Log the account out for the moment.

Change the Server name to login.oscar.aol.com

You can leave it on port 443

If you use SSL add a "s" in front of the name "slogin....."

Hi,

Try this:-

In System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab add a Public DNS server or two.

List of Servers.

I use the two Google ones, second in the list.

Hi,

An IP starting 10.x.x.x will be Device on your LAN.

I have no idea why it would list three separate ones on your LAN.

I am the Admin account on my computer and it might be because your account on your Mac is not an Admin one.

Hi,

So this Google Mail ID has been working as a GoogleTalk ID for some time ?

It has been working in this version of the OS and the version of Messages you are using ?

(the Thread is in Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x) which would be Messages 7.something).

So in Messages > Preferences > Accounts the Google Account says talk.google.com in the Server Settings tab ?

It is currently using SSL ?

It is using port 5223 ?

In the account info tab Untick the "Enable this Account" box to make sure you are logged out.

Change the port to 443 (in the Server Settings tab again)

Re-enable the account and try that.

If you go to the Google Mail web page is Chat enabled there ?
