When retrieving mail I get "The Identity of "mail.me.com" cannot be verified"

My mail has worked fine for years.

I recently installed Mavericks. I have a Macbook Air.

Now suddenly when it tries to get mail I get the message, "The Identity of "mail.me.com" cannot be verified"

I can tell it to ignore the certificate and go get the mail anyway, but it is a nusiance to have to do this every time.

What is wrong?

How do I stop that message and get back to normal?

It has taken several pictures to show the message and what is in "show certificate'

They are apparently too large to put in one post, I keep getting an error when I try to submit all the screenshots in one post, so I am sending them in several following posts.

1st here below is the message that occurs, and the info at the top of the "show certificate"

Thanks for any advice.

I am guessing that by “iCloud Preference pane” you mean in Mail Preferences, Accounts, choose the account ‘iCloud’ and under ‘Account Information’ uncheck the box labeled “Enable this account”, and then recheck it.

If I am wrong about this, please correct me.

In any case I have done what I think you mean just now, and I will have to wait to see if it solves the problem. It is late here, Holland, and I will go to bed now, and see tomorrow if this has had any effect. It does not seem to happen every time mail loads, so I may have to wait a day or two to be sure it worked.

If the error occurs again, I will post again. If not then problem solved, and my thanks to you.

I tried the connection Doctor, but no luck, I still get the error mesage.

Then I tried Csound1's recommendation of signingout of iCloud, deleting, rebooting, and signing in again. The first time I opened Mail, the same message ("The Identity of "mail.me.com" cannot be verified") appeared.

I'm still looking for suggestions.

Apparently this is not a simple problem.

I have just been talking directly to Apple and may have a good and simple solution.

When the message ("The Identity of "mail.me.com" cannot be verified") appears it is because I mostly using the old @mac.com and not the newer @me.com or @icloud.com. Apparently it doesn't like to older certificate for @mac.com

The solution that has been recommended is to click, 'Show Certificate' and there, just under the padlock is a check box labled, "always trust mail.mac.com when connecting to mail.me.com"

Check that box and the problem should go away.

I have to wait until I get the error again, and it is late so I probably won't try it till tomorrow, but it seems so obvious and she seemed so sure, that I am confident that it will work.

I hope others can profit from this if they have similar problems. I will mark this as solved when I have tried it and am sure it works.

Thanks to all,
