iPad2 not connecting to 2.4Ghz Wireless Networks

My issue is that without any updates from Apple, my iPad2 stopped connecting to my home wireless. I have a MediaLink 2.4 Ghz Wireless N router. I have done everything from "Forget this Network" to Rest Network Settings" to wipe the whole iPad and nothing has resoved the situation. I am running IOS 7.0.4 (the latest). I have even called MediaLink and they had me try a few things, but still nothing works. The iPad will connect to SSID's that run on the 5Ghz frequency or any dual band wireless routers (ie those that broadcast SSID's at the 2.4 and 5 Ghz frequencies). I have an open ticket with Apple and now dealing with the product engineers for about 3 weeks. They have finally recognized this as a code issue with 7.0.4 IOS. I am awaiting a fix. Apple also acknowledged that this is a software problem and that mulitiple people are affected. Stay tuned for an update to IOS for the fix......

Sigh, I have tried to help a friend with exactly the same problem! At first I thought it was a simple user error, and expected beeing able to fix this in a few minutes. After spending 4 hours trying to diagnose the problem, I found that the transmitted power from the iPad is extremely low on 2.4 GHz, and it WILL connect if one hold the iPad extremely close to the router! This is verified on 3 different 2.4GHz routers/nets. Now just to be dead sure, I even tried at a different location, where 2.4 and 5 GHz were available, no problem connecting at 5 GHz but no luck with 2.4GHz. I even used my Agilent spectrum analyzer and could not see any signals at 2,4 from the iPad but strong signals using my iPhone4s connecting to the same net.

It would be very interesting if you could try connect to your 2.4 GHz net by placing the iPad ontop of your router just to confirm my findings...

Hi,

I have the same issue with my iPad mini running latest iOS 8.2. My model is more than two years old and worked flawlessly. Two days ago the issue started that the iPad was not able to connect to well known wifi access point.

I am glad to find this thread. Now I am sure that the described problem here is also mine. 5GHz is OK and 2.4GHz only works in close distance to the access point.

I live in Germany and will show up tomorrow at an Apple shop to see what they say.

Spachner,

I'm the original person that started this thread and Lasse_Moell actually discovered the root source of the problem. My story was a very long one but to sum it up, I basically upset Apple enough that they started deleting my post because I was violating the terms of this forum. What I posted were things like case numbers which not only helps them cause the two original cases opened inthe US and Europe have lots of technical details, but also helps those customers that are less technically than myself or Lasse. Other things that were deleted were links to pages that Apple has known about this issue for A LONG time ( search for this subject on web sites that have the number 9 and the number 5 in the URL ). Sorry I can't tell you the site or numbers cause for sure they will delete them. Also mysteriously I stopped receiving notifications from this web site when this thread gets updated. Why....who knows? Anyway my story ended well, but by far it is not the most common.......Apple did replace my out of warentee iPad 2 but it was a 3 month battle, calls to HQ's, and very technical debugging where there was no technical response to our findings. Unfortunately the cheapest and less trouble "fix" the consumer holds the answer....buy a dual band router and replace your working one you have. My only other suggestion is Lasse told me in Europe you have some sort of consumer protection for electronics ... kind of and extended warentee from the European Union..... Hopefully I am explaining it so you understand. Good luck.

Hi gloede99,

thanks for your post. This morning I went to an Apple store in Munich and explained the Genius my problem in very technical way to convince them that there is nothing else to do than replacing my iPad mini. Surprisingly he believed my elaborations and showed really understanding. Not surprisingly he was not allowed to follow my with and simply replace my 2 years 5 month old iPad without consulting the local store manager. This guy however was really rough talking, unsympathetic and arrogant and simply explained that Apple's law is never to replace such an old device independently of the failure. The only he offered was a replacement with the very same (old) model they still have on sock for such kind of problems, but I need to pay about €140,- ! No wonder that I declined.

Now I am sure about what I often read in blogs that Apple do not care about their customers. I will not go further on this issue since I own a 5GHz Wifi access point I can still use the iPad at home. I am not sure whether I will by another Apple product in future...

Hi all,

today a bought a dual band Wifi range extender (WN3500RP, from Netgear, http://www.amazon.de/Netgear-WN3500RP-100PES-Wall-Plug-Edition-Universal/dp/B00A N50BSS) which is (so far I know) the only device which allows to repeat 2.4GHz input data at the 5GHz band. This allows me to connect my half broken iPad to the 5GHz band while the data is repeated to a legacy 2.4GHz Wifi access points. This mode is called "Fast Lane" by Netgear. Works great.

Costs about €70 and is better than purchasing a new iPad.

Dear Gloede99, I´m very glad to find your post. I have exactly he same problem with two of my iPAD (3rd gen and mini iPad). Both don´t work in 2,4GHz and Apple retalier here in Brasilia, Brazil don´t even accept to analyze my situation because they run a basic test and it´s fine....WOW I´m planning go to justice to force them fix or replace them because I can prove that is an Apple issue (because if I change to 5Mz they work fine and I have 4 other Apple products that work properly in 2,4Mhz).

As you have read, if you don't have Apple Care....Apple will be VERY reluctant to help you. Like I have also stated, I would love to give you my case numbers for Brazil to reference, but if I do, the post get's deleted and I get a not so nice note from them stating that I am violating the terms of this forum. One thing I can tell you is if you have a dual band router or can pick up one very cheap, it will be the quickest and cheapest (unless your devices are covered under Apple Care) way to fix. It stinks cause this is an Apple issue and not anyone elses. Like I stated in previous posts, if you search the internet you can find an article that shows that Apple technicians have known about this issue since 2012 cause there was an internal memo distributed that someone took a picture of and posted it. So not much more I can say other than good luck.

I have the same problem on only one of my three 2nd gen iPad's (All running same iOS version and firmware). It happens to be the one my wife uses so it was causing some stress lol. Anyway, thanks to all the information here was able to confirm that if I put the iPad right near the wireless AP, it worked fine but anywhere else it wouldn't see it as an available wifi network. Strangely enough it would work fine off of my AT&T iPhone HotSpot. For now, I just installed a newer wireless AP (Cisco EA2700) which is dual band andthe iPad works fine on the 5GHz band! Lol. Again, thanks to all who provided so much good information to allow me to not have to call Apple or waste more of my evenings troubleshooting this time waster! Thanks!

I have been following this thread for some months now. I have iPad2 and I HAVE THIS ISSUE TOO - APPLE!!!

Here is the chronological.

1) Stopped working one fine day without any trigger (no fall, no water). Maybe software upgrade was the only noticeable event few days before that.

2) Tried a DFU, other tips, tricks. No avail.

3) Went to Apple Store - they said hardware has probably the problem. They wouldn't do anything even if it was APPLE PROBLEM.

4) After reading these forums, tried "put it on top of the router" trick which works.

5) I also thought 5GHz might work. Waited for few months with iPad becoming a brick.

6) Got the latest and greatest dual-band Netgear Nighthawk router - a powerhouse really.

7) Now iPad works alright on 5GHz in the same room. In next room, you can read news but not HD video. Two rooms away, no wifi again 😟 . Remember this new router of mine is blockbuster really. You can use it in 3 floors of a house and about 50 feet away with high strength.

Reading my post, I sound absurd to myself. But really, I have been trying so hard with Apple. The products can have issues, but the service and support should be better given that you always pay a premium on the price of Apple products. I have had 3 major Apple issues in less than 1 year on different devices.

I would like to share my experience with this issue.

By July 2015 i got an Ipad 3 WIFI and 4G as a gift, brand new, sealed. I don't know if it was an old stock or where it came from. Either way there are still plenty on sell on the net. Tried for the fist time in August 2015 and for my surprise the thing would not connect to any WIFI Signal. Them for my self figured it would only connect if placed directly on the router. Tried updating iOS but did not work. So i open a case with Apple and the only solution i got was to pay 299 USD for a replacement (yeah really, that' so clever). I tried speaking with apple representative by the phone and went to about 5 representative and an hour of talk. Last representative was from some consumer relation or warranty related department, and after repeatedly explaining him that this was a gift, he stand that i need to present and invoice or they would not give me any warranty support, even they knowing that i registered the product on August 2015 (It's of common knowledge that to use and ipad for the first time, you need to connect to internet and register it first, and Apple will know when it was first used). So i ask the person to transfer me to a technical representative to see what option they give, and after explaining again the issue person put me on hold and the call mysteriously dropped.

It's incredible that even having the means to know the product is new, they will do everything to avoid responsibility for their faulty products. Now i feel like i just have a fancy LCD Screen.

I just read the 9to5mac post, and can say it's not limited to WIFI only versions. I will keep trying to see what Apple say about it.

Thanks for this forum. I just started having this issue with my iPad mini (G1). After a couple of phone support sessions with Apple their solution was to send in my iPad and pay $220 for a "fix". Since my iPad mini is far from warranty I was going to try a wipe and restore with an older iOS, but the advice here shows that would most likely be ineffectual. Does anyone have experience with the fix they are proposing? I am thinking I am better off paying $300 for a new iPad mini2 rather than throw good money after bad.

Thanks,

jkvt

I thank you and Lasse_Moell for your insight and posts. I've read this entire thread and at least I know I'm not crazy. Unfortunately, I purchased a new 2.4Ghz, single band router, attempting a solution before finding this thread. Luckily, I already had an installed, dual band router (with 5Ghz band) that my troubled iPad Mini connects with on the 5Ghz band, so I have a work-around in place. Too bad I assumed my $30 router was the problem when it was the much more expensive Apple Mini that is defective. It's weird that my problem only manifested this week when you started this thread nearly two years ago. My confidence in Apple is shaken by their lack of transparency and response to this issue. Rare is the exception to corporate self interest, regardless of the mastery of marketing an image.

Ok- so how should I proceed. I haven't been able to connect to my 2.4ghz network since updating...i can't tell you which one that was. And yup when the phone is on top of the router it will connect. I can connect to my 5ghz. There is nothing wrong with the output because my computer, ipad, additional 2 iphones, and fire connect. I've done everything (forget, rename networks, wipe the phone....). I've chatted with support and I will be going to the "genius" bar for the second time today. Am I really going to have to buy another phone because they can't there act together???? I don't want to buy another apple product because of this.

May 23, 2016 7:48 PM in response to gloede99

Hi, just wanted to leave my fix here. I had my front screen replaced and the wifi cable broke in the process so it was replaced as well. When I received it back the wifi would not connect to my home router. I was thinking it was the wifi cable was not connected right. After a lot of searching and resetting different settings I decided to check my router settings. I simply changed something in my router settings then changed it back so basically all I had to do was reset/reboot the router and it is fine now.

Fix: Reboot router from the router page in my browser although turning the power off then back on would probably have worked too.

On another note I tried to connect to my wife's phone through her hotspot and it wouldn't connect to that saying I had the wrong password even though I had it right there. Doesn't matter now though.

Cheers

gloede99, Thank you very much for creating this post. I've the same issue since I upgrade to iOS 7, finally I know that I'm not alone.....

Without luck, even my iPAD2 was able to downgrade to iOS6, the issue still exist. Having know that the iOS7+ is slowing my iPAD2 without the wifi fixed, I'm still working with iOS6 now.

BTW, does anyone know is the problem solve in iOS9? iPAD2 is a good device, I'm still hoping Apple are willing/going to solve the issue for us. 😊
