Some Devices Can Connect to Internet, Other's Can't

At home I have a PC, two iMacs, a Mac Pro, 3 iPads, and 3 iPhones trying to connect to my home Wifi at various times, but often some of them cannot connect to the internet despite having connected to my Wifi network. Side by side one iPhone will connect and another will not. My PC connects to the internet via Ethernet, but everything else is by Wifi.

Here's my set up. Upstairs a cable, with Comcast service, goes through a splitter. One goes to a Motorola SBM1100 MoCA device. The other to a Motorola Surfboard Extreme DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. An Ethernet cable goes from the cable modem to an Ooma Telo device, and from there to an Airport Exteme (version 7.6.4). I created a WPA2 network I'll call My Main Network. An AirPort Express is in another room and extends the network. Downstairs, where there is poor wifi thanks to granite, etc, I installed a Motorola SBM1400 MoCA device connected to another cable outlet. To this I connected an older domed Airport Extreme, and created a new WPA2 network I'll call My Secondary Network. I also recently set up a guest network on the Airport Extreme, though the problems happened before I did that.

When I connect a Mac Pro to the SBM1400 downstairs with an Ethernet cable, it shows in settings that there is an Ethernet connection, but I can't get anything on the internet. I also don't get anything when I connect to My Main Network or My Secondary Network via Wifi. Yet I can connect with my iPad to either one and connect to the internet.

I tried restarting the cable modem, Ooma Telo, and Airport Extreme. I reset one of the iPhone network connections to the factory default. I finally deleted the networks, and reset them up giving them new names, but still some devices will connect and others won't.

I seem to have had more problems since I added the MoCA devices, but turning it off doesn't fix the problem so I'm not sure if it's related. I called Arris/Motorola customer support but the guy just threw out a bunch of technobabble and I couldn't figure out what he was saying, despite being fairly sophisticated with computers, though networking is not my strength. My guess is that maybe there are too many devices and there are not enough IP addresses or something available, but I'm not sure. I'd appreciate any help.

The only way a complex setup like this is going to make sense is if you give us lots of info.. screen shots are the best..

There is a very clear setup info for the MoCA devices.

Open the airport utility and click on the airport extreme..

I want to see the following.

The summary page.

The internet tab..

So click edit and then internet.

My current setup is unusual.. but I need to see your setup.

And the network tab.

I have no experience of this gadget but it worries me.

I want the actual details..

I want to see the IP the Mac Pro gets.. because no where have you mentioned how SMB1000 plugged into the network upstairs.. it should have ethernet to the Extreme.

Give me a screenshot of the MacPro actual network page. I want to see full details with gateway and dns.

Give me the values.. full details of the ipad details.. including gateway and dns.. (gateway = router in apple speak).

Try leaving out the Ooma Telo device.. ie straight from cable modem to the Extreme.. but you will need to power cycle the modem for the Extreme to get the IP address on wan. I would say this device is limiting your internet.

Thanks. Below are some screen shots. Yes, an Ethernet cable runs from the Airport Extreme to the SB1000 device.

For my iPad: IP Address 10.0.1.10, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Router 10.0.1.1, DNS 10.0.1.1, HTTP Proxy Off, DHCP selected.

For my iPhone: IP Address 172.27.35.34, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Router 172.27.35.1, DNS 172.27.35.1, HTTP Proxy Off, DHCP selected.

I can't take screenshots off the Mac Pro since it won't connect to the Wifi, but it has the following: Configure IPv4 Using DHCP, IPv4 Address 10.0.1.8, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Router 10.0.1.1, Configure IPV6 Automatically, DNS Server 10.0.1.1, MAC Address e4:ce:8f:33:b0:78, Configure Automatically, MTU Standard (1500).

I haven't disconnected the Ooma device yet as we need the phone at the moment.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

For some reason my screenshots look fine when I'm writing my reply, but don't show after saving. So here's the information:

User uploaded fileAirport Utility on iMAC Network tab:

Router Mode Off (Bridge Mode)

Everything else blank.

Airport Utility on iMac Internet tab:

Connect using DHCP

IPv4 Address: 172.27.35.67

Router Address: 172.27.35.1

Everything else blank.

Airport Extreme:

Yeah it is a start.. it is showing why the setup is complex.. you have two different subnets working here.

For my iPad: IP Address 10.0.1.10, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Router 10.0.1.1, DNS 10.0.1.1, HTTP Proxy Off, DHCP selected.

The MacPro also gets this

IPv4 Address 10.0.1.8, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Router 10.0.1.1,

How many other devices are getting 10.0.1.x addresses. Do they get internet?

This comes from the old domed Airport Extreme..It is setup wrongly as router when it should be in bridge.

For my iPhone: IP Address 172.27.35.34, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Router 172.27.35.1, DNS 172.27.35.1, HTTP Proxy Off, DHCP selected.

This is the Ooma Telo,

It is the main router for the network and probably has limited IP addresses and throughput.. This was probably setup according to instructions as being the main router in order to fix QoS issues.. but these routers are seldom up the duty required. And it probably slows your whole network down.

As I said.. remove the Ooma Telo router/voip device.. plug it in behind the AE. ie it should be a client on the network.. not the main router.

Change the AE over to full router mode.. you will have to power down the modem so the AE can pick up the main public IP and route that to the network.

Then the airport downstairs needs to be in bridge not router mode.

I plugged the Ethernet cable from the cable modem directly to the Airport Extreme Internet WAN port, then connected a cable between the Airport Extreme and the Ooma Telo device.

With lots of restarting of various devices I finally got things working, though I haven't fully test it yet. I actually had a lot of trouble with the MoCA devices once I tried to encrypt that network and had to contact their tech support 3 times, and had to contact Ooma tech support to get it working again.

Also should connection sharing for the Airport Extreme (not the domed one) be to share a public IP address, or off (bridge mode)? I set it for the former. I'm not sure what you mean to put it in, "full router mode".
