Time Machine interface frozen. Must exit using command, option, escape.

When I enter Time Machine (from Finder, email etc) I am presented with the usual interface, but apart from the starfield animation, it is frozen.

The cursor can still be moved and background apps continue to run ok, but nothing happens when I click anything and there are no animations when I scroll over the timescale on the RHS of the screen.

The only way out is to use Cmd, Opt, Esc

Looking at my backup USB drive using Finder I can see that backups are working OK.

No antivirus software in use

Diagnostic on external backup drive (using the Mac Disk Repair utility) indicates all OK

Can anyone advise steps to troubleshoot and to resolve?

Thanks

Dave

I'm running Mavericks on late 2012 Mac desktop. Backup to 1TB G-Technology G-Drive connected direct to Mac by USB.

Extremely late in commenting in on this but have found that with Yosemite the Trusteer Rapport software and Time machine worked fine.

Now I have El Capitan installed the Trusteer software appears to freeze the Time machine as described in previous posts.

Uninstalling Trusteer Rapport resolves the issue completely.

This would seem to indicate a conflict. No idea how to resolve it if I want to keep using Trusteer Rapport

Update:

I created a new user account with admin permission.

Time machine opens and behaves normally in this user account

Does this suggest an application in my user account is interfering somehow?

1Password and Dropbox installed and running in background

Lightroom 5, Moneydance and Orbicule Witness are often used (non-Apple) Apps

Are these likely to interfere with Time Machine?

Any suggestions as how best to troubleshoot further?

I'm also finding after force closing Time Machine that Finder then needs to be 'relaunched' - 'application not responding' is showing prior to relaunching when the Finder icon is right clicked

Also, a shared network drive is showing in Finder with a 12 digit ref no. It won't connect when selected. Any ideas?

Thanks

Dave

Update 2:

Time Machine currently working OK after the following actions...

I disabled the items which load at login (Dropbox, Mail, iTunes Helper and Canon IJ Network Scanner)

After a restart, the Time Machine interface started behaving normally

I re-enabled all but Canon IJ Network scanner and restarted again. Time Machine still behaving normally.

Ha. I thought we've got the culprit; Canon IJ Network scanner, but no...

I then re-enabled Canon IJ Network scanner (expecting the Time Machine interface to freeze this time), but all still working OK, so now I'm confused !!

Have I achieved a clean-out by starting without the login items and managed to clear the problem?

I removed the invalid com.dymo.pnpd.plist from library/launch daemons and also uninstalled Trusteer which I understand can cause issues

Will monitor and see how everything behaves (Time Machine is behaving OK at the moment...)

I can't find a newer version of software for my Dymo LabelWriter 400

Any other suggestions gratefully received...

I don't know if anyone is still interested in this topic, but I was having exactly the same issues as the original poster. The interface looked fine, the backups were being made, but I could not click anything inside the UI.

I stumbled across this tip elsewhere, so I'm posting it here in the hope that it helps others: I'm using a dual monitor set up, and apparently the OS gets confused about which screen it's supposed to be on. Close all Finder windows then open a new one, and if it's not already in the main screen then drag it there. Now you should be able to open the Time Machine and interact with it through the UI without any issues. If the finder window is on the secondary monitor the UI appears to move it to the main one as the TM opens, but it does not bring with it the ability to interact.

Hope this can be of help to someone.
