Hello I bought a mac book pro retina 2012 release date 12months old 2nd hand on ebay
I cannot get a pound sign from the key board
All the help on message boards says Alt/Option plus 3 should work. Not for me it doesn't.
I can't change it in system preferences.

Go to System Preferences>Languages & Regions>Keyboard (if you're running Mavericks anyway) and see which keyboard layout you're using:
I'm set for US - and that's where option + 3 produces the £ symbol.

this apart could you send me a few pointers for numbers, i am used to dragging formulae on excel but this does not seem to work on numbers.
there must be another shortcut.

What does ordinary shift and 3 give you. My UK keyboard is the same as yours in that:
Option +3 is #
Option +2 is €
on mine, shift 3 is £
shift 4 is $
(for completeness, Option +4 is ¢)
£ = option + 3 - works for me. Which keyboard layout do you have selected?

Option +3 is a hash on my key board
Option +2 gives me the euro sign €

I have MacBook Pro with european keyboard and I must press Shift + paragraph/plus-minus to receive pound sign. Euro - Option + 3.
If you select the English Canada keyboard under settings, general, and delete the English British. shift+3 = # but option+3 = £. hope this helps, kittlingbourne.
