scanning with canon printer MG7150

I have just bought a Canon multifunction printer MG7150. I have an iMac running OS10.9.1. I can print over air-print, but cannot scan wirlessly. I get the error message 'An error occurred while communicating with the scanner.' I have tried turning everything on and off, reinstalling all the software and drivers and reselecting the printer. No luck. Has anyone else had this problem and solved it?

Thanks for your advice. I tried both applications, and the regular Apple one under System Preference. And, yes, I did install the 3.1.0 driver. No improvement.

I have since discovered that I can scan using a USB link, though the main reason I bought this printer was to be able to scan via WiFi, as our old Canon printer did not support recent OS upgrades.

So with the MG scanning fine via USB, it would suggest a network configuration issue. So with the USB cable disconnected from the MG and on the wireless, open Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector EX which is located in /Applications/Canon Utilities/IJ Network Scanner Selector EX. Do you see the MG listed with its network address (the alpha-numeric string), similar to what is shown below.

If you do, then select it (if not already selected) and press OK. Then quit the Scan Selector app and open Canon IJ Scan Utility. You should now have the option to select the networked MG as shown below.

Bingo! The J Network Scanner Selector EX seems to be missing from the software I downloaded. What there is instead is a file called IJ Network Tool.

Using this, I was able to configure the network to allow scanning. Many thanks for your advice, without it would have taken a lot longer to solve the problem.

Hello,

Like a lot of things one does with computers, one forgets the details once the problem goes away.

However, as I recall, in trying to get the scanner working I had ended up with several versions of the MG71350 printer in the Printers and Scanners in System Preferences. I deleted the lot and installed just one. I then opened the Cannon IJ Network tool which you will find in your Canon Utilities in the software folder. Next I went to Setup in the dropdown menue (top left), waited for the system to find the printer, which it did (though it may ask you what happened to your USB printer first if you have not deleted this). It should show something like MG7100 series followed by the MAC address; the Name: Canon MG7100 series; Type: Canon; Connected to: LAN. Once this appears, use the update button and see if that solves your problem.

In the interests of your sanity, I just repeated the above and I still have a wireless link to the scanner function.

Good luck

Hello again,

Assuming you have all the software for the printer drivers downloaded (there is a complet package on the Canon website), including Canon IJ Scan Utility2.app, and that your printer has the latest firmware, then I can only conclude that either you have a problem that I do not understand (most probable) or that somehow you did not complete all the operations necessary. This is quite possible as the Canon Help is quite Unhelpful on the matter.

First of all, delete the printer from the printer preferences. Then reistall it again. Next open the Canon IJ Network Tool. When you have located the printer use Update, then Configuration. This should give you a screen titled Setup Completion showing the Model: MG700 series and the Nework (SSID), your router. Click OK and you should get a confirmation message. After that I hope the scanner will work. I just tried all the above and I can still scan wirelessly. Not sure if you really need to start by removing the printer, but that is what I did.

Better luck this time.

Congrats on being able to install the canon. I just tried setting up a 7160 and after all the software installs, the canon network tool can't find anything, even though I've previously set up the printer from its panel and made a couple of prints from the pad.

The network "tool" (possibly me) insists on connecting via USB, but after the password point, fails to find anything on the network and suggests manual setup which eventually comes back with a greyed out option that has the actual network info of the printer. Selecting this results in more searching and failure to find any printer. Repeating this excruciating process with minor variations is driving me nuts.

I don't know if my choice in accepting the firmware "upgrade" option the printer offered soon after the initial wireless setup on the printer was a wise decision.

The printer/scanner does operate with USB, but the scan colour is poor. This is odd as the preview is correct and every other scanner I've used scan virtually perfect colours (ie: the same as the original).

Aarrrgggghhhh.....

After wasting a lot more time, calling canon ended up working for me. After explaining to the support person my procedures and that the printer was visible on the router itself, he finally suggested restarting the router. ***. I can see that it's connected! Try it any way. Bingo. Everything works as advertised. Don't remember seeing anything about restarting the router in the minimal setup procedures or online "help". Dohhh
