open digital camera in Finder like a hardrive/thumbdrive

hey guys.

when i plug in my digital camera to my macbook, it automatically opens up iphoto and asks to import photos.

i was just wondering how would i go about using my digital camera like a pure SD card reader, so i can move files to and from the SD card in the digital camera, like a thumbdrive that shows up as its own drive in Finder.

Have you been able to do this before? A lot of cameras don't seem to let you do this... I've only had one in the past (I've had 5 cameras) that did this.

hey guys.

well i found out that to "mount" your camera on to the mac desktop, you just have to set it from the camera's menu. look around for the Transfer settings in the camera.

not all cameras have it though. whether you are able to mount a camera to read like a hardrive is a function of the camera, not OS X.

This is actually a good question since I'm not really sure how to do this. Windows does this without a hitch, how come OSX can't. I, too, would like to open my camera in finder! There's no option in my camera for this. This has to be an OSX thing since Windows sees my camera as a harddrive.

What kind of camera do you have? I would like to be able to do this... mine is a Canon Powershot SD200.

If your camera and the storage card inside conform to the USB mass storage device specification, it can mount on your Desktop as if it were a hard drive. Not all cameras comply to that specification. It's a bit hidden, but if you want to change the default action that Mac OS X takes when you plug your camera in, you need to open the Image Capture application. This is where you can change the preferences. It's not in iPhoto, which I think is really confusing. In the Image Capture preferences you can choose "No application" to open when you plug in a camera.

I would like to add that the first time you use iphoto there is a dialoque box asking if you want to lunch iphoto each time you connect a camera or not. If you choose not to, then when you plug in your camera it just mounts in the desktop.

Afterwards you can do it from the image capture preferences like Doug said, which is a bit strange!
