Why can't I add transitions?!

Please I'm not teasing You but some has used iMovie for Years and some are new.

I asume You are new. If wrong I'm appologizing.

If You want a transition between two clips You select the title of the transition
and drag-drop it inbetween the two clips that are to be affected in timeline.

If this doesn't work then it most often is so that one of the clips has a to short
duration to make the transition possiby.

If You are use to transitions and iMovie and it's still a problem then the origin
can be much more severe with deleting pref files, creating a new account, running
repair programs like Apple Disk Util tool, etc.

Please give feed-back on how You are doing.

While some Transitions can be Added to a single selected clip, other Transitions require your selecting two clips (or more if you prefer). If the proper number of clips isn't selected, the Add button is disabled (greyed out).

For example, if you select a single clip iMovie lets you Add a Fade Out transition. By definition that transition follows the selected clip. But you can't Add a Cross Dissolve for iMovie doesn't know whether you want it to go before or after the clip.

By default, iMovie Previews the transition as it would look if placed BEFORE the clip, but to use the Add button, you may have to select two clips.

Note, however, that using the Add button is not required. You can also drag the name of the transition where you want it to go in the Timeline. iMovie will slide clips over to make a place for the transition.
