How to convert Hi8 to iMac? Have 2 video cameras: Sony CCD-YRV98 video Hi8 and Panasonic SDR-SW20 digital video. Please provide the steps to convert to iMovie '11. Also, is there a way to burn in blu-ray?

I already have two video cameras. One older (Sony) in Hi8 and the less older one (Panasonic) which is digital. Between the two can it be accomplished to transfer the Hi8 video on tapes to iMovie?

I have the newer iMac 21.5" and also would like to know if it is possible to record this on blu-ray. The iMac didn't come with iDVD, which means I have to get that uploaded. Any other suggestions?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

The Hi 8 video is probably analog, correct? If that is the case then it must be digitized either while being imported or externally and then imported. For the digital video camcorder there should be a connection from the camcorder to the computer that will provide the connection necessary for importing the digital video.

Getting back to the analog Hi 8 video, I have a product, ADVC110, which I connect to the camcorder and to the computer and the ADVC110 digitizes the analog videowhen I select the import process in iMovie. The connecting cables from the camcorder to the ADVC110 are RCA cables, red - white - yellow, and from teh ADVC110 to the computer a Firewire cable.

Hi,

In my original question I made an error where I described the Panasonic SDR-SW20 as a digital video. It is a SD Camcorder (I guess that is not digital as I thought).

My other camera, the Sony CCD-TRV98 Hi8 Handycam (oops, I just realized I wrote the "YRV98" earlier, which is wrong), doesn't have RCA cable connections (no red, white, yellow). It has a "S Video Out", A/V Out (which is a pin insert), and the AC/DC out.

Thanks for helping.

The S Video cable goes from the camera to the ADVC110 and the Firewire cable goes from the ADVC110 to the computer. The Firewire connector on my ADVC110 is compatible with the original Firewire 400 and the new Firewire is Firewire 800 which has a different connector than the Firewire 400 so I had to get an adapter to connect the older Firewire devices to the computer through the Firewire 800 port. Also, if you are going to buy an ADVC110 shop around as the prices vary by as much as $70. And then there might be another device that you can use in place of the ADVC110 so look around.
