airplay randomly kicking in

Hi.

I have a yamaha amp for surround duties which has airplay built in, handy on the very rare occasions I want it.

however when trying to play music from my mini into my main hifi via optical it sometimes randomly decides its going to play from airplay.

This is an issue accross my devices, I think osx for what ever reason in a split second cannot find or use optical so decides to default to airplay.

I absolutley want this behaviour to stop, for me it should be a simple case of disabling airplay in OSX, but cannot find any method to do so, is there like a terminal command or something to make OSX ignore airplay?

Guys I have a theory.

In my case, I have a Mac Mini connected via HDMI for video, and optical for audio to a Denon receiver. Like the OP I have had the Denon randomly kicking into airplay for no apparent reason.

So I noticed something odd about the timing.

1) It only ever happened when I was watching video on the mini through the AVR.

2) It happened once every hour in the wee hours of the morning and randomly through the day.

I read than when using AC3 passthrough via optical, the Mini can only deal with one audio source at a time.

Well as it turns out, I had set the computer to announce the time every hour. I noticed that I never got this announcement during the wee hours where I watched continuously. Through the day it would happen randomly... not investigated yet but is it possible that the new mail or iMessage sounds or system beep are triggering it?

I have turned off the time announce, so far so good!

Figured I'd share in case this can help someone. But I will most likely disable airplay on my AVR

This just started happening to my Mini two days ago. The only "new activity" I have done was to open iTunes and stream music over Airplay to a Yamaha receiver. This Mac is connected to the receiver via HDMI, so airplay has not really been used prior to that afternoon. Since then, when turning on or off the receiver & TV that is connected to the mac, there's a small chance that the Airplay mode is kicked on by the automatic switching on the receiver. I'm convinced there is some OS setting that has been adjusted by iTunes, and it's driving me crazy!
