Mac Pro (early 2008) keeps crashing

I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) that keeps crashing, becoming ever more frequent. It usually happens upon starting up the computer, and once it's all loaded, it crashes, as in all shuts down, and then immediateky restarts itself. This can go on repetitively 10 times or more. Usually, once it's stabilized and remains open, perhaps after 30min-1 hour, it will remain ok for the rest of the day. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem. Do I need to update the memory/the graphics card/buy new computer?! Any advice would be very much appreciated. Here are the specs:

Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Memory 6 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM - 2GB 2GB 1GB 1GB (4 slots free)

Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB

Software Mac OS X Maverick 10.9.1
Raid Hardrive
And here is the problem report:

AHT by now is only on the OEM DVD and is not fool-proof or definitive or much else. Just a way to rule out some obvious failures.

a new set of 2 x 2GB FBDIMM $25 might be worth for testing.

replacing the ATI 2600XT or get Apple to, they still will it seems like.

Was it a clean install of Mavericks? did you import your old apps and profile data? might be worth a look at redoing.

Some airport and wifi/BT cards can be suspect.

Whatever is happening, all those crashes are going to mangle the directory of the boot drive even more. Reason in spades to have a clean system, image it for restore, and so you have a system just for testing.

3.1's in their 4 yrs have had more issues like this than any other model.

A friend had similar problems with his 2008 8-core. Not necessarily crashing while in use but upon sleep or waking from sleep it would shutdown instead, and occasionally while working it would shutdown. (Shutdown as opposed to crash where the machine stops as if someone pulled the plug or OS becomes unresponsive. So soft on the hardware, annoying as heck for the user)

He tried reinstalling OS, use external start ups, zap PRAM, reset SMC, and no change.

Turned out to be a bad PSU (power supply unit). Once he replaced that the trouble went away. Not the cheapest part to replace though... Better than a new CPU...

Good luck

I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago, with my Early 2008. The solution proved so simple, and cost no more than a can of compressed air. Try taking it outside in some protected area, remove the side plate, and just go to town blowing out every last bit of dust from everwhere you can reach. It was an instant solution for me, and now I do the same thing every six months or so. Give it a try - you've nothing to lose.

Kernel Panic, machine check, uncorrected error or error overflow correlates strongly with RAM memory errors.

Your Mac Pro may have encountered an uncorrectable (usually double-bit) memory error. If there were single bit (correctable) memory errors leading up to it, you could see them in:

About this Mac > More Info > Report > memory

They would look like this:

User uploaded file

.

Thank you so much for all your help. I will check the memory when I get to computer in a few days and also try removing the dust as suggested.

It wasn't a clean install of Mavericks. Perhaps this is the next step. I need to try and get all the data off the computer beforehand before it all crashes.

It's all a guessing game, and I think it would be best for me to take it into a shop to get it properly checked out

Thanks again
