Mac keeps losing internet connection - Resolving Host

I've been using my current setup with no problems.

Out of the blue, my Mac Pro loses internet connection. At least, that's what it looks like. The browser keeps saying "Resolving Host" and just hangs up.

The only work-around has been to go to Network preferences and click Advanced and Renew DHCP License. This only works for a few minutes. Then it goes back to being stuck.

I've got an Airport extreme in the other room with 2 more macs running fine. This computer is a Power Mac running 10.6.8. It's hooked via ethernet into an Airport Express. I've also got an old Macbook downstairs that's working fine off the wi-fi.

Any ideas?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

I had the similar thing happening on my MBP I found a post suggesting that adding a location to Network Preferences will help. I can't find the post so I give my thanks to the internet and hope it lands on the people that found this helps. In my case my internet worked for a while, then trying to open a page or do a search would take a really long time or fail, cycling the wifi connection instantly fixes the connection and it becomes responsive again.

I have lots of systems, Windows, Mac, Linux, this only happens on the Mac's and it's not any obvious network setting. I suspect adding a new location resets some hard to find or hidden options that may be causing the issue.

Adding a location seems to band-aid the issue for awhile, I have done this twice in the last six months, first time was like magic, doing it again seems to be working.

1. Open System Preferences:

2. Open Network

3. At the top there is a combo box for Location, expand it and select Edit Locations.

4. Click the plus sign and create a new location name eg: Milky Way Galaxy

5. Click done.

Optionally add manual DNS addresses (seemed to be working just via DHCP but I still like manual DNS settings):

1. Open System Preferences

2. Open Network

3. Select Advanced

4. Click DNS tab

5. Add some DNS servers eg: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 from google or 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 from open dns.

I am having this problem right now. Nothing seems to work. iPad works fine on Wi-Fi. PS3 works fine on ethernet. iMac running Mavericks is barely connecting.

u torrent has been running slow for a few days or weeks. It will be connecting at .1 KB/sec. when I check on it later sometimes it has been completely downloaded and sometimes it is running at normal speed. I just thought it was a problem with bt. But now I have been having problems connecting pin every other program too.

Safari status bar turns blue for about an inch and then stops. Yesterday it eventually loaded pages after leaving it alone for several hours. Today that hasn't happened yet. Mail shows ? on images of previously downloaded emails. neither seems to think that anything is wrong.

I am running little snitch status which also doesn't indicate anything wrong, it says things are connecting.

restarting doesn't help. Went into safe mode. Same problem. restarted router several times. Try to reset DNS in terminal. Tried doing most of the things in this thread. It didn't help. When I enter DHCP manually it showed connection errors in mail and bit torrent. But I just figure I entered something wrong because when I went back to automatic it acts like mail and Safari are connecting but they just hang indefinitely.

Ok. Internet is working again, sort of. I had tried to access my router in the browser and this eventually connected after an hour or so (didn't even load Verizon logo though). When I typed in my user and password it actually came back with an error (again, after a long wait) about how the connection timed out and I should try again. Suddenly, the other pages I had been trying to load in other windows then started loading.

I re-entered my info to log into my router and then it started to load the page but said "Cookies are disabled. Please enable cookies and try again" which seemed weird. Then I tried to go to this page and entered my name and password and nothing happened. Actually, I got it wrong the first time and it gave me an error, when I got it right it just kept me as guest. I downloaded Firefox and logged in fine, both to this page and to my router. (Not sure what I was going to do once I logged in, but I felt like I had tried everything else!)

Could this be related to corrupted cookies? Why would that affect mail and bit torrent? Also I forgot to mention that iTunes was hanging when I opened it, I assume it was trying to connect to the store and couldn't. Also, when I had actually gotten my internet to work yesterday, it had logged me out of sites I was on, which usually does not happen when I restart. So there is some more evidence I guess.

I don't want to delete all my cookies, I'm sure there is a lot of useful info in there for sites I go to! Maybe I'll just switch to Firefox. (I never use it because I feel like it scrolls too slow compared to other programs, I haven't tried it in years but this new version seems like it does too).

Mail now loads images from e-mails but has not fetched any mail from today yet. It seems like uTorrent is working.

I'm having the same problem. Brand new MacBook Pro, Yosemite 10.10.4, and every 10 mins or so the internet connection (not the wifi connection) drops for a couple of minutes then eventually comes back (or you can accelerate the process by turning wifi on and off again). This is extremely frustrating as I use skype a lot for work and, of course, if you're in the middle of a video call losing the internet just cuts you off. I'm pretty sure it's not the router as I have no issues on my old windows laptop or my iPad or iPhone and the same problem exists at home, at my office and everywhere I take the **** MBP. Have tried everything in this thread to no avail.

If I had any hair left, I'd be tearing it out with frustration!

Hi Everyone,

A quick update with my issues:

Sadly, the only way I managed to get a good internet connection is by switching my router into modem mode and buying an Airport Extreme. Since buying it and setting it up, no internet issues at all. I was so desperate this was my last option... and it worked.

And in all honesty, i'm not so sure if its a *bug* anymore... or a way for Apple to get you to buy their products. Either way... disgusting and ridiculous.

BUT

Until Apple acknowledges this as an issue and until they fix it, I plan on buying and returning the Airport every 14 days (in which you have full right for a refund).

I am now on my 3rd Airport.

Very easy to setup so swapping it in for a new one every 2 weeks is not that much of a hassle.

As for Apple, I don't care anymore.

They can figure out what to do with their semi-used airports.

£1200 for a laptop that's trying to push 'wireless connectivity' yet it cannot connect wirelessly is a joke.

Everything has been working ok for a few days except I was still having a problem in Safari where sites would claim I could not log in unless I turned on cookies, but cookies are on. This is one of those sites and it is working in Firefox.

So I finally decided to delete my cookies and start over. But now after quitting and restarting, pages aren't loading again. I also decided to try to update Safari, but App Store doesn't seem to want to connect either.

I just got an error message from Safari, this is actually progress because it hadn't happened before.

Request Timeout

The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request.

I am totally lost. I am on ethernet, so I don't see how this can be solved with an Airport.

Honestly, neither did i, but it seemed to work... what router are you currently using? any chance its a netgear or tp-link?

The problem seemed to resolve itself when i changed my router to 'modem mode' only so it was NOT broadcasting any networks and then use the airpot.

Honestly, give it a try. You can return a used item to Apple within 14 days of purchase, even if there is nothing wrong with it (just don't drop it or anything). This is in the UK at least. If you are located in another jurisdiction I would check their policies first.

I really don't know why an Aiport would work, but it did it for me. I haven't had any issues since doing this.

EDIT

Do try all the other possible solutions listed here and around the net though... not every problem is the same 🙂

Safari works in Private Browsing mode. It takes a while for pages to load at first, from several seconds to several minutes. But once I'm on a site, further pages load quickly. When I switch off Private Browsing it hangs again. I don't want to restart my computer because Firefox is still working fine as is uTorrent and it seems like this problem is only with making the initial connection, then it works fine.

I tried using my phone as a wifi hotspot, same results as my FioS router. Firefox worked, Safari didn't. I also tried clearing my history again (I had restored it from Time Machine) which doesn't have any effect so far. I just figured since Private Browsing was working maybe the problem was related to history. Also one time when I got it working after a safe boot, my history had been erased.

Jul 29, 2015 5:38 PM in response to hippehop

Update: I was still having trouble with Safari over the weekend. It kept telling me to enable cookies even though they were enabled. So I deleted all cookies, history, etc etc. Still didn't work. I needed to access Google docs, couldn't sign in due to this cookie issue. Could sign in on Firefox but it hung when going to my drive. So I figured Chrome would work and it did!

I had a ton of work to do so I didn't want to troubleshoot this anymore before I got it done. Well I only had two things left to do and my computer froze (this happens sometimes when overworking it). When I restarted, Chrome started working instantly!! Safari still doesn't work and this was 2 hours ago. Skype did not connect until I quit and restarted it. Mail is not loading images but seems to send messages and at least receive test messages to myself (two different servers).

I'm thinking maybe Chrome works because it was a new install? Maybe it is avoiding whatever is corrupted or messed up on my computer.

It just seems weird that this problem would not just affect Safari and Mail, but also Skype and bittorrent, which seems to be working now but I didn't check until an hour after my computer had restarted and like I've been saying, it seems to work fine after initially connecting, which often takes some time.

Still have no clue what to do about this or what is causing this problem but it seems to be related to cookies or some other preference.

Sep 28, 2015 10:25 PM in response to hippehop

I think I logged on under an old account. I am hippiehop above. I am still having this problem. Chrome has been working fine so I never tried to figure out what was wrong with Safari. But I recently had a power outage which damaged my directory on my hard drive so I have been using an old system install on an external. That system was connecting fine with the Internet in Safari and mail. so it is not a router or network issue or even a computer hardware issue. but for other reasons I cannot run that system software permanently.

I then installed a back up from Time Machine onto a new blank external. This is having the same connectivity issues I was having before and now chrome does not work at all either. After about an hour or two Safari started connecting but I am still having the cookies problem I mentioned above. I cannot access Google Docs which I need for work.

my new question is: can I copy some preference or other network settings file from my old system that is running fine onto my new system? or is there some other place to troubleshoot this issue because I am at my wits end. I don't even know if I can install an entirely new system and restore from time machine without replicating this problem so I'm not sure how I can even start anew.

it does seem to fix itself over time except for the cookies. But it feels like there is some sort of firewall or throttling going on in my computer. Or something is misprioritizing my Internet traffic. Right now mail works but still does not show images. This happens every time I reset my computer and can take several days to correct itself usually. It is very odd. Torrents are not connecting at all though it says it's connected. Router also says that it is connected. System preferences also says network is connected.
