Thank you SO much. I was in the process of downloading Sophos after reading your previous replies. I hope it works. I am scanning now & hopefully it finds it--Avira doesn't seem to find anything, but the free version of MacKeeper keeps detecting it.

Thanks again for your help & such a prompt response. It is truly appreciated.

Best.

Downloading and installing ANY antivirus app for OS X is a big mistake. I would STRONGLY recommend uninstalling it immediately per the developers instructions. If you continue to treat your iMac as a MS Windows you will continue to have issues. The BEST thing you can do for OS X is to run Software Update and install the recommended updates. Installing third party security, enhancment, performance etc applications will evetually wreak havoc on your machine. OS X is extremely secure and antivirus applications tend to create more problems than they solve. Install Sophos at your own risk.

rkaugmann87---understood, however, I've already run the system updates yet the file keeps showing up when I scan with MacKeeper. My computer is clearly running slowly prior to the anti virus download. Therefore, what else would you recommend? I just want my machine fixed--that's all.

Thanks for your input.

Best.

You need to uninstall MacKeepter which is malware itself. The more garbage software you install on your computer the worse it will run and the more difficult it will be to help you. Macs do not, repeat DO NOT repeat DO NOT need any third party applications to improve performance OR improve security. Please follow the directions Linc provided in this thread for uinstalling MacKeeper.

Please stop treating OS X like it is MS Windows!

How did you get rid of it?

Get rid of MacKeeper.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.

If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.

If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.

  • If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
  • Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
  • Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
  • Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.

You will be asked to authenticate (twice):

You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:

User uploaded file

Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.

After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

Please describe the problem in detail by creating a new Discussion, and include your relevant system details. EtreCheck is good for that. As you are now aware, attempting to address a Mac problem by downloading some magical cure-all, whether it's MacKeeper, Sophos, FixMyMac or similarly ill-conceived junk, is not going to help and is very likely to compound whatever problems may exist.

I need to emphasize that my particular problem was the result of human error, not my operating system. After Sophos pointed me to the problematic files that I deleted, I uninstalled both MacKeeper and Sophos, and hopefully, learned my lesson.

I'm not sure if your problem is similar to mine, or possibly something else.
