Making the icon shape match the image

So I have an image I want to use as an icon for a folder. I basically want the icon to appear just as the shape of the image, with the background coming through the surrounding, i.e. the W in the Word icon. Currently when I paste the image to the folder as an icon image, it is surrounded by a white box (the background).

I've through several searches, have made the background transparent in Photoshop, exported as a png, have reopened in Preview and have had no background showing. Unfortunately when I attach it to the folder it is still bound with a white box when displayed as the icon, SL puts the white background back in.

Any help, or links to examples I can use to fix this?

ForeCast,

This is a multi-step prcess, and I hope I can explain it clearly to you.

Open iPhoto and drag the image you wish to use to the desktop, close iPhoto.

Open Preview>File>Open and select the image you want and click Open. (It will open as being huge and you need to reduce the size, use COMMAND- to reuce the size (did 7 clciks for this one)

Then go tp Preview menu, clcik tolls>Annotate>Add Text, (click on the icon in the bottom left with the text in a square if it does not self select) Then in the size tab make it the largest font There will be grey dots with a cursor in it. Type what you want, in this case I typed a upper case W. you can drag from the center of the square of the dots to center it. Now click the red close screen butto in the upper left. (it sgould ask if you want save, click Save)

Then double click on the image to open it, and press COMMAND A, then COMMAND C, Quit Preview. Then click an empty space on the desktop so that nothing is highlighted, and opens the finder menu.

Now click on File in the Finder menu and click New Folder. Click on a blank spot on the desktop so that nothing is highlighted.

Then click on the new folder to highlight it (one click) and press COMMAND I to open the info window.

In the upper left you will see "untitled Folder" click once on that to highlight it, press COMMAND V.

Youe image should show up, you can close that, and then click twice on the bottom of the untitled folder (About a 1 second clcik between clicks, and it should turn white click in there to put your cursor in, and type the name you want to call it. When done typing, just click on a blank spot on the desk top and you should be done.

I hope you were able to follow my convoluted directions and have sucsess.

Feel free to ask questions.

Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS. Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer. When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

After doing the above:

Highlight the icon........

Hold down the Option Key......

Go to File>Get Info......

In the existing window, click the existing icon, and then choose Edit>Copy

Next, click the icon to which you want to transfer the copied icon. Its icon now appears in the Info dialog box that’s still open on the screen.

Click the icon in the dialog box, and this time choose Edit>Paste. Viola!!!!! You now have a new icon.

Or you can download this easy to use simple shareware program called CandyBar. This easy to use piece of software is also less time consuming. And is now FREE!!!!!!

Thanks for the response, sanjampet, but I think you did misunderstand. I am able to paste the image as the folder's icon. What I'm looking to do is to not have a background when the image is accepted as the icon. I currently have a round image of Chrome (the web brouser) which I'm trying to attach to a folder.

I'd tried removing the background in Photoshop, making it transparent, but OS X puts it back in when opening the pict file. It fills it in with a white square background.

Any advise for this would be appreciated.

O.k, baby boomer, you inspired a test for me.

I pulled the icon-image off an app that had a background-less picture, where the icon was in the shape of the image and there was no square background.

I copied this and then attached it to the file I'm trying to create and voila, there was no background attached.

I am therefore doing something wrong when editing or saving my pictures in Photoshop.

I could use the step-by-step procedure for creating a background-less pict and then turning it into a background-less icon.

This is where I'm going wrong.

Thanks.
