Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Kernel Panic

I get these Kernel Panics from time to time. Sometimes two or three in one day. Sometimes the computer is idle for awhile and bam! Another one. Changed the memory sticks three times.

No one seems to have a clue about this!

Running 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro 3,1 (2008). Is this 32-bit kernel?

"Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected." -- that is indeed usually a RAM memory error, but if this is not a current panic log, and you have changed memory three times since then, then this report is meaningless.

You were running two non-Apple kernel extensions at the time, which may contribute to instability:

  1. com.rogueamoeba.InstantOnCore 6.0.3
  2. com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn 6.0.3

What do you think should I do about this?

The Mac Pro uses ECC DIMMs. eight extra check bits are generated on writes to memory. They are checked on every Read from memory. Double-bit errors are usually uncorrectable, and cause your Mac to halt on a kernel panic.

The check bits are arranged so that combinations of the bits can be used to determine which bit is in error when a single-bit error occurs. Hardware in the Xeon processor then corrects these errors with no slowdown. Later, software notes the error and flags the DIMM where the error has occurred. If you keep asking for a fresh report,

About this Mac > More Info > Memory .... can show you where the errors are occurring.

You now seem to have even more non-Apple kernel extensions. Methodical debugging of most kernel panics would have you remove them and try running without them to see if there were any difference.

  1. net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio 1.1.0
  2. com.techsmith.TACC 1.0.2
  3. com.rogueamoeba.InstantOnCore 6.0.3
  4. com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport 4.0
  5. com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn 6.0.3

RE: removing kernel extensions:

These must be addressed on a case-by-case basis, as each of these is installed by more than a simple drag-and-drop into the Applications folder. You will need to go to the site that provided the Installer and seek out the Un-Installer. Sometimes this requires a re-download to get the Installer and Uninstaller together.

RE: Not seeing errors (yet)

Each time you invoke the report, it will show the accumulated corrected errors (if any). You may get an advance warning of problems, you may not.

What it is showing is that you MAY have your DIMMs installed in a non-optimum way. In general, DIMMs should be in pairs. On later Macs, the recommendation has been to install the Densest DIMMs in lowest-numbered slots. That is not explicitly stated for your Mac.

Those rules would suggest that your 2GB DIMMs should be placed in slots 1 and 2 on each Riser.

Those non-Apple kernel extentions are or where installed by software that, as far as I am aware of, worked very well on this system.

I removed three of the four you indicated. The AmbrosiaSW probably is a leftover from some video capture software I had as a trial and has been removed a while back. I cannot find

com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport at all.

As for the DIMM placement, I think I correctly followed these instructions :

You should install FB-DIMMs in matched pairs of equal size and equal specification. Use the table below and the instructions that follow as guidelines for DIMM placement.

If you haveInstall
Two DIMMs (standard configuration)One on the top memory card and one on the bottom card
Four DIMMsOne pair on the top memory card and one pair on the bottom card
Six DIMMsTwo pairs on the top memory card and one pair on the bottom card

These instructions taken from http://http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4433#4 for the Mac Pro (early 2008)

Had two KPs since I last wrote. Having a hard time finding the non-Apple kernel extensions listed above. Removed applications related to Telestream, Ambrosia, but still can't find :

  1. net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio 1.1.0
  2. com.techsmith.TACC 1.0.2
  3. com.rogueamoeba.InstantOnCore 6.0.3
  4. com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport 4.0
  5. com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn 6.0.3

Looked into /user/PIDEJA/Library/Preferences and /user/Library/Application Support

Should I look else where?
