I have been dealing with this forever. No matter what format I save a Word document in (.doc .docx or whatever else), the recipient (microsoft user) is still not able to open the file in word. Does anyone have any idea why? It's driving me a little nuts.

Yes, I can open it just fine. It opens directly in Microsoft Word.

I take it back. When I add the attachment to my email, it loads as a microsoft document. I can open it from the email I am writing before I send it. Once I send it, the format evidently changes. When I send it to myself, I click it, and it says "Open with: Text Edit (Default)". So my microsoft friends evidently don't have textedit.
Please save the attachment to your desktop, then right click on it and choose get info, look in the info panel for file name and extension, then look below it for Open With.

No they won't, but Windows comes with Notepad, which can open a text file.

That was totally unexpected, .png is a picture format not a document format.
Right now I am stumped.

More questions, does the file actually open in Preview, if yes, what does it show? And did the filename and the extension change?
Right, I may have misunderstood what you meant by download to desktop. When I click the attachment, I can either "Open with: Text Edit (drop-down menu)" or Save. But save doesn't save to desktop. I can "Open with: Microsoft Word" fine.
When I compose an email, I click attach. I select the file that is in a .docx format. It appears to load to the email correctly, and if I click that extension, it opens correctly in Word out of the pre-sent email. After being sent, it appears in god knows what format and wishes to open from TextEdit.
Was I doing something wrong when you wanted me to download to desktop?
Select Save, pick a location where you can find the file (desktop is easy)
It is important that we deal with the received file, and not as an attachment preferably.
I'm confused. When I click "Save" there is no "save to" option so it just saves to downloads. I can drag and drop from downloads to desktop.
This way the Name and Extension just shows "Assignment #1" which is what I originally saved the file as.

BTW when I double-click the file, it opens in word for me just fine.

When sending email from my Mac, Word documents do not send correctly. The recipient cannot open them. Any idea why???
