I have been dealing with this forever. No matter what format I save a Word document in (.doc .docx or whatever else), the recipient (microsoft user) is still not able to open the file in word. Does anyone have any idea why? It's driving me a little nuts.

That's a filename, I want to know what the extension is, it started out as .docx, what is it now?

The extension is missing, changing (Change All) the Open With association for a file with no extension will cause all files with no association to open with Word. That was probably not a good idea. Manually add the .docx extension to the downloaded file (do that in Get Info) email it to yourself and do check again. Please make no more changes without asking first.

Yes, it appears that the problem is at the receiving end, not the sending end.
What exactly do you mean? That looks like it was an improvement if it is sending correctly as a Word file. I should be able to send that particular file to the person I need to send it to, and it will appear in the correct format, right?
Here is another tid bit for you if the person on the receiving end has Microsoft Word they will be able to open it right up.
Otherwise you will need to change the format of the word document to PDF and they should be able to open it with NO TROUBLE.

Assuming the document has the required file extension ( .doc or .docx ) then right click on the file and choose "Compress xxxx". Attach the created .zip file to your email and send them that.
FWIW make sure all your Word documents are saved with a .doc or .docx file extension. Your Mac may know to open that document in Word for you, but on Windows the extention, rather than any other properties of the file, tell Windows which application to pass the document to.
Sending a .zip file as Kurt suggests may help in some cases, thought personally I think .zip files are more suspect than a .doc that I am expecting.

Double-check that you can click the "Download as zip" link, unpack what downloads, and open the Word document inside it. If you can get it then so should the other party.

Try using .rtf (rich text format), then any PC or Mac word processor can open.

b) after I receive it on my other Mac I copy attachment to desktop and select cmd-i (or "get info")
c) "Document Kind"is "TextEdit Document"
When sending email from my Mac, Word documents do not send correctly. The recipient cannot open them. Any idea why???
